Students will explore will the aesthetics and traditions associated with the following processes: cyanotype, platinum/palladium, and gum bichromate. Students will also explore various methods for making negatives to be used with these processes. Students will be required to keep a journal to document ideas, a technical notebook in the form of a portfolio book documenting the technical assignments and corresponding notes, and a final portfolio of 10 - 12 matted prints. RECCOMMENDED TEXTBOOKS: The Book of Alternative Processes, Christopher James Coming into Focus, John Barnier Keepers of Light, William Crawford Other readings and technical supplements will be provided SUPPLY LIST: Typical darkroom supplies Medium format, large format, and pinhole cameras MAY be used and will be discussed Medium and large format film (as needed) Inkjet transparency material (Pictorico as needed) Fine Art papers specifics to be discussed, some paper will be supplied: Rives BFK, Arches Watercolor cold press, Bergger COT, Lana Aquarelle Hot Press, Arches Platine, BienfangGraphics 360,CansonVidalon Velum, Acid free rsum paper Watercolor pigments for gum bichromate (with watercolor pigments, you get what you pay for: Winsor and Newton are the best and most expensive, Grumbacher Academy are cheaper, but will work) Suggested pigments: Cadmium Yellow Deep (Y) Alizerin Crimson (R) Cobalt Blue (B) Burnt Umber Burnt Siena Neutral Tint (black) Foam brushes

If you miss more than 2 classes, your final grade will be dropped one letter grade. If you miss more than 3 classes, you will fail this class. If you come to class 30 minutes late, you will be counted absent. We will be covering a lot of material in each class meeting and you are strongly advised to come to class prepared to work. GRADING POLICY Assignments must be turned in on time. Assignments will be evaluated in a group critique format and attendance for these critiques is mandatory. Submitting work without participating in critique will result in a one-letter grade drop. Not attending critique and not submitting work will result in a two-letter grade drop. Attending critique and not showing or submitting work will result in a late assignment. Late assignments will be marked down one letter grade for each class they are late. If you

have a conflict with a scheduled critique date it is your responsibility to make arrangements with me to present your work to the class at another time. Since much of the discussion of work in this class is conducted in critique, class participation is mandatory and will be taken into consideration for grading.
