Based on the given definition of HRQoL, I believe that it may be seen as the actual health status of the

subjects contrary to what is expected given the condition that they are experiencing. It was mentioned
that the actual definition of HRQoL is ambiguous and there is the lack of consensus is acknowledged.
One cannot fully measure a patient’s HRQoL because it has to come from the patient itself.

The author used the Walked and Avant concept analysis methodology which is one of the most
commonly used concept analysis methodologies available. The author first selected the concept which
was HRQoL in Nursing Home residents with Urinary Incontinence. After which, the author sited and
quoted numerous reviews of literature to determine the aspects of the HRQoL of the patients. After
which, the author mentioned the negative and often devastating effects of UI for both physical and
psychological attributes. These are some of the defining attributes of the effect of UI to patients. The
author then presented related, borderline and contrary cases which illustrated how the concept was
used. Admittedly, the author noted that most of the literature referred to was derived from the
discipline of medicine. It was mentioned that the medical model does not contain all the aspects of
holism central to the discipline of nursing. Caring for patients as a whole is a vital factor in determining a
patient’s HRQoL one must not solely focus on the physical and psychological and social effects of the
disease.

The article provided the theoretical and operational definitions of HRQoL. The theoretical definition is
broader and gives a general assessment of the positive outcomes to be determined in order to achieve
an overall general improvement of HRQoL. The result should show that all aspects that is impacted by
the disease shows an improvement which can be very difficult to measure from an observer point of
view. Contrary to the theoretical definition, the operational definitions are more focused and are much
specific to the disease. The operational definitions show a certain amount of the patient’s perspective of
the outcome. The operational definitions tend to provide an in depth understanding on the prioritization
of the concepts and outcomes so adequate measures can be identified, modified or developed based on
evidence-based practice.
