SOP 024: Install Sumo in any site using GTM

Goal:To learn how to have Sumo installed on your website using Google Tag Manager

Ideal outcome:

 Once installed, you will have easy access to your Sumo account, from the
homepage of your website. 
 You can boost your website traffic by utilising the tools available when you use
Sumo. 
 By using the Google Tag Manager installation method, you can make sure that all
of the code that is added is categorised under this one feature. 

Prerequisites or requirements: Google tag manager installed in the website, You will need to
register your Sumo account

Environment setup: Make sure you have the Google Tag Manager set up and that you have
access to it

Get a free sumo account

The first thing you need to do to install Sumo is to Sign up for a free account

1. Click here to go to sumo and register for and account


2. Enter your website’s URL as well as your email address and choose a password.
3. You will be redirected to the screen below. Take note of that script, as we will manually
Install it in Google Tag Manager later.

4. Copy the code generated which we will be manually installing in Google Tag Manager.

Manually install Sumo in Google Tag Manager


Note: the direct integration between Sumo and GTM doesn’t currently work so the following
steps will show you how to install Sumo manually

1. Open Google Tag Manager in a new tab and choose the container name of the site where
you want to install it.
2. Choose the container name of the site where you want to install it.

3. In the left side bar you can see Tags and then click new

4. Rename the tag to something like Sumo GTM integration and click on the tag icon above
the choose a tag type to begin setup.

Note: so when creating new tags It is recommended that you define a naming convention
from the beginning so that google tag manager can set this up really organizedly and it is
also easy to maintain for many years to come
5. Now we are going to choose our tag as custom html tag

6. Paste the Sumo script from the sumo registration tab in the custom html field
7. Scroll down and add trigger

8. Select all pages and add


9. Then click save

So when you click on the tags in the left sidebar you will see the most recent tag that
have been configured.

10. Here it is so we just have to submit it

11. Now you will be required to enter a version name and description. Adding a name and
description is optional but its recommended, you should enter the information here so that
it will easy to know what changes are being made. An then press publish and your
account will be published
12. If you go to workspace, you can preview weather or not live or not

13. Enter the URL of your website and connect


14. So this will open your website URL on a new tab, you should be able to see a message
here that will say Debug information for this page is viewable in the Tag assistant
window. This means the debugger has been connected successfully.

15. Go back to tag assistant, the sumo integration is properly fired so you can navigate to
other sites other pieces of the site and repeat the same steps to make sure that the tag is
firing in all the bases. So you can basically go to different pieces on your site and check if
the tag is fine in all the places.

Now that the sumo has been installed in your site it will be very easy to access it.

Log in to Sumo
1. Go to Sumo and log in and see if your connected or not
