1. List three good things about Negi’s home in Macún. In what ways is her home
different from a typical American home? (5pts)
- Three good things about Negis home in Macún are that she was
always treated with tenderness,
- Her home in Macún is different from a typical American home
because of what it is made of. She describes her Macún home in the
first page of Jíbara saying and I quote “a rectangle of rippled metal
sheets on stilts hovering in the middle of a circle of red dirt. Our
home was a giant version of the lard cans used to haul water for
public fountains. Its windows and doors were also metal…” Apart
from that they seeped in hammocks.
2. Briefly describe the significance in Puerto Rican society for each of the following:
the first spring rain, a dead baby’s eyes, eating pineapples, a large forehead, a
child striking a mother. (Provide examples when necessary)

3. Define imperialism. Why do some Puerto Ricans in this book believe America is
guilty of imperialism?

4. List five adjectives to describe Negi’s character. Cite an incident from the story
supporting each adjective you select. For example, Negi is jealous when she
thinks about Jenny.
