Computers of the Third Generation (1965 - 1971) • Although though transistor technology was a

significant advancement over vacuum tubes, issues still existed. The transistors were installed
individually in unique packages and connected to one another on printed circuit boards using unique
wiring. This technique was difficult, time-consuming, and prone to mistakes. Small-scale integration
describes the earliest integrated circuits (SSI).

This generation of computers had a smaller physical footprint, were less expensive, had more memory,
and had significantly faster processor speeds.

iv. Computers of the fourth generation (1972 - Present)

• To build computers, use Large Scale Integrated (LSI) and Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuit
technologies. A single integrated circuit chip can have more than 1,000 components.
