a. Pedestrian Walk Time (sec): 7 secs

b. Pedestrian Clearance time: 3 Secs
c. Vehicle Minimum Green: 3 Secs
d. Vehicle Phase Maximum: 10 Secs
e. Vehicle Phase Red Clearance: 1 Sec

Pedestrian Cross Walk Flow Chart per approach

Note: Pedestrian Phase timing can be fine-tuned during operation review and testing
Pushbutton Scenario

Pedestrian Cross Walk Brief

In two (2) stage pedestrian crossing, the vehicle movement are independent for both approach which
means that the cross walk timing is not influenced by the adjacent cross walk timing as each cross
walk are operating independently. Below are the typical scenarios in the two (2) stage pedestrian
crossing.

Scenario 1: Stage A – Vehicle Phase 2 and 4 are illuminating green signal light; Pedestrian phase 1 & 3
are illuminating red signal light. The pedestrians shall place a request to the controller for
pedestrian walk time.

Stage B - Movement 1
Pedestrian demand on Phase 1 Pedestrian Crossing
Signal Light Status: Ped Phase 1 on Red; Vehicle phase 2 on Green;
1. Pushbutton is pressed on phase 1 pushbutton (sidewalk) – Call request sent to controller
2. Controller receives the pushbutton request and register the call on the phase where the
request originated.
3. Controller shall transition the Vehicle green light ph2 to pedestrian phase1 using the phase
timing plan (see Phase Timing Plan Table). After signal light transition, signal red light is
illuminated in the vehicle phase 2 and the pedestrian green light is illuminated phase 1.
4. Controller serves the Pedestrian phase indicated by illuminated pedestrian green signals,
audible sound and tactile are enabled.
5. When walk time is completed, pedestrian signals flashing green is illuminated indicating
that the pedestrian walk time is about to extinguish.
6. After flashing pedestrian green light, the pedestrian signal red (ph1) is illuminated,
disables audible sound and tactile.
7. Vehicle Phase signal illuminates green signal light (ph2). The vehicle phase2 shall rest on
green signal light until the next pushbutton call request.

Pedestrians on the median.

When pedestrians are on the center refuge island (median), the pedestrian may continue
to cross pedestrian phase 3 which is the adjacent pedestrian cross walk.

Stage B – Movement 2
Pedestrian demand on Phase 3 Pedestrian Crossing
Signal Light Status: Ped Phase 3 on Red; Vehicle phase 4 on Green;
1. Pushbutton is pressed on phase 3 pushbutton (median) – Call request sent to controller
2. Controller receives the pushbutton request and register the call on the phase where the
request originated.
3. Controller shall transition the Vehicle green light ph4 to pedestrian phase3 using the phase
timing plan (see Phase Timing Plan Table). After signal light transition, signal red light is
illuminated in the vehicle phase 4 and the pedestrian green light is illuminated in phase 3.
4. Controller serves the Pedestrian phase 3 indicated by steady illuminated pedestrian green
signals, audible sound and tactile are enabled.
5. When walk time is completed, pedestrian signals flashing green is illuminated indicating
that the pedestrian walk time is about to extinguish.
6. After flashing pedestrian green light, the pedestrian signal red (ph3) is illuminated,
disables audible sound and tactile.
7. Vehicle Phase signal illuminates green signal light (ph4). The vehicle phase4 shall rest on
green signal light until the next pushbutton call request.
Pedestrian crossing scenarios in pedestrian movement 1 & 2 are applicable in both direction of
the pedestrian cross walk. ie. Movement 2 can come first then Movement 1. The pedestrian
and vehicle timing shall be as per the timing plan.

Stage B – Movement 3
Since each pedestrian crossings are operating independently in a staggered pedestrian
crossing set-up, each pedestrian crossing shall operate independently based on the
time that the pedestrian made the call request (pressed the pushbutton).

Scenario 2 – Pedestrian Green Signal light is illuminated (applicable in either phase 1 or 3) and
pushbutton is pressed
During Pedestrian walk indicated by pedestrian green signal light illuminated, when
pushbutton is pressed during this period, the call will be received by the controller but the
pushbutton call request will not be stored as the pedestrian walk time is active.

Scenario 3 – Pedestrian Flashing Green Light illuminates and pushbutton is pressed

1. During the Pedestrian Flashing Green light period and pushbutton is pressed, the
controller receives the call request and store call request in the requesting phase.
2. The controller will continue to complete the vehicle green time (min green + max time).
After completing the vehicle green time (max time), the controller will transition the
vehicle phase to the pedestrian phase.
3. The Pedestrian phase is served by illuminating pedestrian green signals.
4. During the start of the pedestrian phase, the stored call request is cleared.
5. The pedestrian phase shall transition to vehicle phase when pedestrian phase is
completed.
Note: Vehicle phase is configured to Rest on Green in the absence of pedestrian call.

Pedestrian Push Button Function
The AGD946 combined Puffin nearside signal and demand unit consists of a two
legend signal (a red waiting man and a green walking man) and a Call Accepted
Indicator with an illuminated push button to provide pedestrians a demand call
request facility.
The combined nearside signals incorporate both a Puffin nearside signal and
pedestrian demand unit (with ‘call accept indicator’). The AGD946 are designed
for use on pedestrian crossings and should be mounted on the upstream pole
from the wait area. The combined nearside signal runs from a nominal 48Vac.

Operational Function

In the design phase, the pushbutton is installed at specific locations in the

pedestrian crossing. These locations are registered in the controller’s database to
determine the origin of the call. Once a pedestrian request is placed by pressing
the pushbutton switch, the call receipt indicator will illuminate to indicate that the
call is requested. Generally, the controller identifies the origin of the call and will
transition from vehicle green to vehicle red as plan the configured clearance timing.

Pedestrian signals are illuminated after the red clearance time of the particular
vehicle phase.
Based on the configured pedestrian walk-time, the illuminated green man figure
will be illuminated along with the pedestrian signal light at located on each end of
the pedestrian crosswalk.

The pushbutton emits an audible sound during the pedestrian walk-time to

provide additional indications to pedestrians with disabilities.

Similarly, during the pedestrian walk-time, the integrated tactile in the

pushbutton is activated.

When maximum pedestrian walk time is reach, the controller initiates pedestrian
by means of flashing green on the green man figure in the pushbutton as well as in
the pedestrian signal lights conveying to the pedestrians that the walk time is about
to transition to red man figure indicating that the vehicle phase has the right of
way.

The flashing green pedestrian clearance time duration is determined during the
design phase of the pedestrian signal control.

After serving the pedestrian phase, the pedestrian signal control will revert back to
vehicle rest on green. The pedestrian signal control will serve the pedestrian
demand call whenever the pushbutton is pressed again.
