Greece

There are many interesting things someone can find out about Greece; it has fantastic geography, an old
history and amazing modern life!

Greece is a beautiful country located in southern Europe. Capital city of Greece is Athens. It was named
after Greek’ goddess Athena, goddess od wisdom and war. It is surrounded by neighboring countries
such as Bulgaria, Macedonia, Turkey and Albania. It is surrounded by Mediterranean, Ionian and Aegean
sea. It is the most mountainous country in the continent. About 80% of Greece is mountains. Greece’s
climate is divided into 3 classes: Mediterranean, alpine and temperate climate. In Greece summers are
usually very hot and drywhile winters are cold.

Greece is one of the top traveled destinations in Europe probably because ofit’s beautiful nature!
Greece has more than 2,000 islands of which about 170 are inhabited. Greece offers exiting water
activities like cruising; diving in underwater caves; and most amazing –swimming with dolphins! Greece
has countless beaches that seduce everyone. The beaches are very safe, without waves, sharks and
poisend fishes. For this reason millions of tourists come to Greece to enjoy fabulous white-sandy
beaches with crystal clear water.

History

Greece is also known as birthplace of civilization because of it’s rich culture and history. These are some
historical monuments that you must visit:

Acropolis of Athens-It was constructed in 5th century BC. It is located on the outcrop above city of
Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings. The most famouse building there is
Parthenon.

Ancient Delphi-in ancient times, Delphi was the most famouse oracle, and people would come here to
ask for prophecy of god Apollo.

Ancient Olympia-place where first olimpic games took place in 776BC.

Culture

Greeces most famouse national dishes are moussaka and gyros.Yoghurt and feta cheese

Dolmades are made from grapevine leaves that are stuffed with lemon flavored rice, fresh herbs and
spices.

Religion in Greece

About 90% of greeks are Christian Orthodox.

Mount Athos (Hagion Oros), or Holy Mountain is located in Halkidiki and that is self-governed part of
the Greeks state, administrated by the Patriarch of Constantinople. There is 20 monasteries and about
2000 monks are living there. Women are not allowed there, only men. Monsk there live a simple life,
and no modern facilities can be found there. They eat small quantity of food every day, manly bread and
olives.

Greeks believe in a lot of superstitions and they are coming either from religion or pagansm, for exaple:

Evil eye(Mati)- basically they believe that someone can cath evil eye from someone else 's jelous
complimwnt or envy. A person who has cought up evil eye feels bad physically and
psychologically.Those who believe in it wear a blue bead with a eye painted on it.

Some of traditional dances are hasapiko and kalamtiano.
