Looking at a map, why do you think that the author


compares Vienna to a gate?
What does a gate symbolize? What do you think of
when you think of Eastern Europe?

Located on the southern tip of the
Balkan Peninsula.
The terrain is rough and mountainous,
with only 30% arable soil.
Small farms and villages are scattered
around Greece. Farmers grow cotton or
raise sheep and goats.

Located on a plain in southeastern
Greece.
A third of the population lives in
Athens, the capital city and largest city
at 165 square miles.
Most of the countrys industry is
located here and pollution is a serious
issue.

A large, hand-shaped peninsula in
southern Greece.
Crops grown include citrus fruits,
grapes and olives near the coasts.
The ruins of Mycenae, the first
civilization on mainland Europe are
located here.

that produces wheat.
The Pindus Mountains surround the
valley, including Mount Olympus,
which was thought of as the home of
the gods in ancient greek mythology.

Macedonia.
Greeces most productive agricultural
area: maize, sugar beets, olives, cotton,
rice, wheat and tobacco.

It gained Thrace in 1919 after WWI.

but only 166 are inhabited.
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands
and is known as the Great Island.
Ionian Islands are fertile and grow figs,
citrus fruits, olives and grapes. Ithaca
was the basis of Homers Odyssey and
Corfu is known for its wildflowers.

Aegean Islands are rocky and dont have
many people.
Cyclades Santorin is a volcanic crater from an
ancient eruption, the biggest in history.
Sporades islanders fish for mackerel and harvest
sea sponges.
Dodecanese largest of these is Rhodes, which
had natural harbors and was home to the
Colossus of Rhodes, an ancient bronze statue.
