Rules and choices (in your family/city/country or in other
cities/countries) ( Unit 8)
Rules and choices vary greatly around the world, as different societies and cultures have
developed their own systems of governance and decision-making.
In terms of rules, different countries have different legal systems that govern their citizens'
behavior. For example, some countries follow common law, while others follow civil law or religious
law. These legal systems establish the rules that people must follow and the consequences of breaking
those rules. Additionally, many countries have specific rules and regulations related to areas such as
employment, healthcare, education, and transportation.
Choices, on the other hand, are often influenced by a variety of factors, including cultural
values, political ideologies, and economic systems. In some countries, people have more individual
freedom to make choices about their lives, while in others, the government may play a larger role in
guiding individuals' decisions.
In general, societies with more individual freedom tend to have a wider range of choices
available to their citizens, while those with more government control may have fewer options.
However, it's important to note that there are exceptions to this rule, and different cultures and
societies have developed their own unique ways of balancing individual freedom and government
control.
Overall, the rules and choices that exist around the world are shaped by a complex interplay
of cultural, historical, and political factors, and they continue to evolve over time as societies and
cultures change.

The Republic of China

The Republic of China, also known as Taiwan, is a democratic country with a presidential
system of government. The Constitution of the Republic of China, which was promulgated in 1947
and has been amended several times since then, outlines the basic structure and functions of the
government.
Under the constitution, the Republic of China has a separation of powers among the
executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. The president, who is directly elected by
the people for a maximum of two four-year terms, serves as the head of state and commander-in-chief
of the armed forces. The president is assisted by the Executive Yuan, which is responsible for
implementing government policies and managing the country's administrative affairs.
The legislative branch of government is made up of the unicameral Legislative Yuan, which
has 113 members. The members of the Legislative Yuan are elected by the people for four-year terms
and are responsible for enacting laws, approving the national budget, and overseeing the government's
performance.
The judicial branch of government includes the Supreme Court, which is the highest court in
the country, as well as lower courts and special courts. The judicial system is responsible for
interpreting and enforcing the laws of the land.
In addition to the formal structure of government outlined in the constitution, the Republic of
China has a complex system of political parties, interest groups, and civil society organizations that
play an important role in shaping public policy and holding the government accountable.
