I. INTRODUCTION

Mood, Affect & Mood Disorder


● Mood
→ a pervasive and sustained feeling that is experienced
internally and that influences a person's behavior and
perception of the world
● Affect
→ the external expression of mood
▪ Doc Gia: Mood is how the patients sees themselves, Affect is
what you're seeing as the clinician.
● Mood disorders
→ a group of clinical conditions characterized by loss of sense
of control and subjective experience of great distress
→ may manifest as reports of patients being sad, hyper,
irritable, or angry all/most of the time.

Categorization of Mood Disorders


● Mood episodes
→ comprised of periods when the patient exhibits symptoms of
a predominant mood state
→ not diagnostic entities
→ Types of Mood Episodes:
▪ Major Depressive Episode
▪ Manic Episode
▪ Mixed Episode
▪ Hypomanic Episode
● Mood disorders
→ clinical diagnoses defined by the presence of characteristic
mood episodes
→ Types of Mood Disorders:
▪ Depressive Disorders
▪ Bipolar Disorders
▪ Other Mood Disorders (Dysthymia & Cyclothymia)
