1. A preposition is a word that shows a relationship between a noun or a pronoun and some
other word in the sentence.

2. A prepositional phrase consists of a preposition, its object, and any modifiers of the
object. The object of the preposition is the noun or pronoun following the preposition

Ex. The kids were trick-or-treating in the neighborhood.

(IN SHOWS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN KIDS AND NEIGHBORHOOD)

Preposition: in
Object of the Preposition: neighborhood
Prepositional Phrase: in the neighborhood
______________________________________________________

3. Sometimes the same word can be used as a preposition or as an adverb. If the word has
no object, it is an adverb.

Preposition: We walked around the city streets.

(prep: around, object: streets)

Adverb: We spent the afternoon walking around.

(no object)

4. When you combine the preposition “to” with a verb, it is NOT a prepositional phrase. Ex.
We went to hide from the teacher.

5. Don’t confuse some prepositions with their homonym verb brothers. Threw and through or
past and passed. They are not the same thing!
