International Criminal Court (ICC)

◎ It is the first and only permanent international court with jurisdiction to


prosecute individuals for the international crimes of genocide, crimes against
humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression.
◎ As a court of last resort, it seeks to complement, not replace, national Courts.
◎ Unlike the International Court of Justice, which hears disputes between states,
the ICC handles prosecutions of individuals.
◎ Composition and voting power ➔
○ There are four organs of the International Criminal Court (ICC): Presidency,
Judicial Division, Office of the Prosecutor and Registry.
○ The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is the organization in
charge of inspecting the detention facility where those arrested by the ICC
are sent.
International Criminal Court (ICC)
○ The Assembly of States Parties ("the Assembly") is the Court's
management oversight and legislative body and is composed of
representatives of the States which have ratified or acceded to the Rome
Statute.
○ Each state party has one vote and every effort has to be made to reach
decisions by consensus.
○ The Assembly is presided over by a president and two vice-presidents, who
are elected by the members to three-year terms.
◎ India, US and China, are not a party to the Rome Statute.
Smart Cities Mission
A total of 22 cities will be ready by next month under the government’s
prestigious Smart Cities Mission.

👉 About
● The Smart Cities Mission is a flagship project of the
government launched on June 25, 2015.
● It is an urban renewal and retrofitting programme to
develop smart cities and make them citizen friendly
and sustainable.
● The Mission is operated as a Centrally Sponsored
Scheme.
Smart Cities Mission
◎ Ministry responsible ➔ Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
◎ The Ministry selected 100 cities for the Mission over 5 rounds till 2018.
◎ Deadline ➔ The projects were supposed to be completed within five years of the
selection of the city, but in 2021 the Ministry changed the deadline for all cities to
June 2023, which was earlier the deadline for Shillong alone.
◎ All 100 cities have also constructed Integrated Command and Control Centres to
monitor all security, emergency and civic services.
◎ As of now, the government has no proposal under consideration to add more
cities under the Smart Cities Mission.
◎ There is no standard definition or template of a smart city and in the context of
our country, the six fundamental principles on which the concept of Smart Cities
is based are:

◎ Objective of Smart Cities Mission ➔


○ To promote cities that provide core infrastructure and give a decent quality
of life to their citizens.
○ The core infrastructure elements under the mission include – an adequate
supply of water, 24*7 supply of electricity, sanitation, solid waste
management, facility of urban mobility and public transport, housing
especially for the poor, IT connectivity, good governance, sustainable
environment, safety and security of citizens, health, and education.
AUKUS Grouping
UK, the US and Australia announced their multibillion-dollar deal to provide
Australia with nuclear- powered submarines.

👉 About
● It is a trilateral security pact between Australia,
the United Kingdom, and United States.
● Announced on 15 September 2021 for the Indo-
Pacific region.
● Under the pact, the US and the UK will assist
Australia in acquiring nuclear-powered
submarines.
AUKUS Grouping

◎ The pact also includes cooperation on advanced cyber, artificial intelligence and
autonomy, quantum technologies, undersea capabilities, hypersonic and
counter-hypersonic, electronic warfare, innovation and information sharing.
◎ AUKUS is part of a wider movement of western countries and their allies to
secure the Indo-Pacific against what they regard as threats from China.
Kappaphycus alvarezii
The government plans a seaweed park in Tamil Nadu, ignoring the threat
that Kappaphycus alvarezii which is widely grown invasive seaweed, poses
to corals in the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park running along the
state's coastline.

● It is seaweed (alga) which is native to the Indo-
Pacific region.
● The International Union for Conservation of
Nature lists it as one of the world’s 100 most
invasive species.
Kappaphycus alvarezii

◎ It is one of the prime threats that killed the corals near Kurusadai which was
deliberately introduced in Ramanathapuram for commercial cultivation some
two decades ago.

👉 Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park


◎ The Gulf of Mannar is one of the biologically richest coastal regions in all of the
mainland of India. It is the first Marine Biosphere Reserve in South and
Southeast Asia.
◎ In India, the Gulf of Mannar region in Tamil Nadu is one of the four major coral
reef areas and the others are the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat, Lakhshadweep and
Andaman and Nicobar islands.
Kappaphycus alvarezii

◎ It is designated as a Biosphere Reserve.


◎ This Biosphere Reserve encompasses a chain of 21 islands (2 islands already
submerged) and adjoining coral reefs off the coasts of the Ramanathapuram
and the Tuticorin districts.
