Kattunayakan or Kattunayakar tribe
The Elephant Whisperers won Oscar in short documentary film which was
shot in Tamil Nadu's Mudumalai- Theppakadu Elephant Camp and It’s based
on Kattunayakar tribe.

● Kattunayakan community, a tribal group that, for
generations, has devoted itself to caring for
elephants.
● They are mainly found in parts of Tamil Nadu and
Kerala (Nilgiris and surrounding region).
Kattunayakan or Kattunayakar tribe

◎ They are one of the earliest known inhabitants of the Western Ghats, who are
engaged in the collection and gathering of forest produce, mainly wild honey
and wax.
◎ Also called as Kattunayakar or Jennu Kurumbas.
◎ This community is one of the 75 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs)
of India.
◎ Designated as scheduled tribe in the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka,
and Andhra Pradesh.
◎ Monogamy is generally practiced among the Kattunayakans.
◎ Religion ➔ Hinduism.
Kattunayakan or Kattunayakar tribe

◎ The main deity of the tribe is Lord Shiva and Nayakkar under the name of
Bhairava.
◎ They also worship animals, birds, trees, rock hillocks, and snakes, along with the
other Hindu deities.

👉 Theppakadu Elephant camp


◎ Located in the Mudumalai National Park in Tamil Nadu.
◎ Established in 1917 by the British, it is the oldest camp in Asia.
◎ Situated on the banks of the river Moyar.
◎ Currently houses 28 elephants who were captured while they were wild tuskers
creating problems for humans, and these elephants are tamed at this camp and
converted to 'Kumki' elephants.

◎ The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) is now merged with the Central
Statistical Office to form the National Statistical Office (NSO).
◎ This merger was approved by the Government on 23rd May 2019.
◎ It is the statistics wing of the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation
and also headed by the same Ministry.
◎ The National Sample Survey Office was set up in 1950 to conduct large-scale
sample surveys throughout India.
◎ There are four divisions of NSSO - Survey Design and Research Division, Field

Parakeets
Police and forest officials in western Assam’s Kokrajhar district booked a
YouTuber for capturing parakeets from the wild and putting them up for
sale on his YouTube channel.

● A parakeet is one of many small to medium-sized
species of parrot, in multiple genera.
● Parakeets comprise about 115 species of birds that
are seed-eating parrots of small size, slender build,
and long, tapering tails.
● They are social birds that roam in large flocks.

from India and Sri Lanka to Australia and the Pacific Islands, throughout
Southeast Asia, and in tropical America.
◎ There are around 11 native parakeet species found in India such as Vernal
Hanging-parrot, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Alexandrine Parakeet, Plum-headed
Parakeet, Malabar Parakeet, Red-breasted Parakeet, Grey-headed Parakeet,
Slaty-headed Parakeet, Long-tailed Parakeet, Nicobar Parakeet, Blossom-headed
Parakeet.
◎ Parakeets are protected under Schedule IV of the WPA, 1972, and capturing,
keeping, or selling them is a punishable offence.
India-Bhutan Satellite
The ground station of the India-Bhutan Satellite, which has been built in
Thimpu, was recently inaugurated.

● It is also known as the ISRO Nano Satellite 2 for
Bhutan (INS-2B).
● It was launched as a payload on ISRO's PSLV C54
rocket on November 26, 2022.
● It has been jointly developed by scientists from
both countries.

by Department of Information Technology and Telecom (DITT) Bhutan and
ISRO's UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) to serve the amateur radio
community, relaying realtime information about the region.
