• Is Management an art, Science, or profession? Explain each with relevant

examples.

Management Science or Art

 It has been said that management is an art struggling to become a science.
 Others contend that the formal study of management began as a science
but has contaminated by too many factors from various disciplines, thus
making it at a best a “soft” science.
Actually, management is an eclectic discipline with element of an art and science

Management science
• Management science is a body of systematized knowledge accumulated
and accepted with reference to the understanding of general truths
concerning management.
• Management science is not so comprehensive or as accurate as physical
science such as math or chemistry.
• Physical sciences deal with non human entities, and it is the inclusion of
human entities that raises the question if management qualifies as a pure
science.
• Different people do not think, act or react in the same manner under
identical circumstances.
• Therefore, management will never become a pure science as physical
sciences; however, great strides have been made in systematizing
knowledge and generalize certain truths.

Management an Art
• The art of management is personal creative power and skill in
performance.
• If science teaches one to know, art teaches one to do.
• Managers have to know and do things efficiently and effectively to be
successful, so there is unique scientific and artistic combination in
practice.
• The art of management begins when the science of management stops
