Super Personalised Session

Chandan Palash
Session Feedback Report-
Hi Chandan, we hope you had a quality super-personalised
session with GM Dejan Bojkov. We believe you had quite an
engaging session on a very important topic ‘Rook ending’ with
the Grandmaster. We believe, you analyzed as well as got to learn
some of the important ideas and concepts in the most occurring
endgame i.e. the “Rook endgames”. So let’s have a look at some
of the important concepts and positions discussed by the
Grandmaster.
POSITION-1
This is a well known Lucena position,
where white plays Rf4 and builds the
famous ‘bridge’ to help the pawn
promote. But can you demonstrate
another idea which is less known but
also gives a smooth win to white. Here,
white can go Ra1!, Kf7, Ra8, Rc1, Rc8,
Rd1, Kc7 and pawn promotes with the
rook’s help. King’s assistance isn’t
required now. The main objective of
this plan is to keep the rook on the
same rank of pawn’s promotion and
eventually the rook will help the pawn
to promote. The reason this method is
not so popular as this plan is not
applicable with the b pawn.
POSITION-2

In this position, it’s white to play and

win the game. Can you workout a
plan for white to clinch the full point?
Well, here white has two ways win
the game. Here, white can either play
Rg7 or Rh6 both the move wins. Let’s
analyze Rg7 as this is more accurate
than Rh6. So the line goes like
this…Rg7, Rf8, Rf7, Rg8, Rf6!, Re8,
Rd6! And Rd8 is unavoidable.
POSITION-3
Here, it’s white to play. Can you
guess what should be the result of
this game? Here, in this position
white is winning with a nice move
Kg5! Giving up e5 pawn with check,
Kg6 threatening mate, Re8 is forced
and now comes the cool move Kf7!
Attacking the rook and also
threatening Rh6#. So white wins.
POSITION-4
Here, it’s black to play and save the
game. Can you defend this position
with black and find the saving
resource? Well here, black has to
play either Rg4 or Rh4 to prevent
Kd6 as it will met with Rh6+. So
after Rh4, Kc6 black plays the
important Rd4 and after Kd6, Kc8
and black survives this position as
white can’t make any progress by
any means.
THANK YOU!
