T
o encourage neophytes in their noble alchemical quest for
the attempted procurement of the Philosopher’s Stone, it
may not be amiss to mention a few of the varied experiences
of the writer in his many years of mental, spiritual, and practical research.
Not everyone will have the good fortune to have access to the numer-
ous books published on Alchemy, as many of them have become exceed-
ingly rare and difficult to obtain. Most of these works are now out of
print, and those who own and treasure them are not likely to part with
them. Consequently, high prices are being asked by many booksellers for
these rare editions. However, we cannot overestimate the true value of
certain of these works, such as The Hermetical and Alchemical Writings of
Paracelsus in two volumes, edited by A. E. Waite; Basil Valentine’s Trium-
phant Chariot of Antimony; Collectanea Chemica; Turba Philosophorum;
The New Pearl of Great Price by Bonus of Ferrara, and other works that
will prove of great value to the student. The writings of Franz Hartmann
also deserve mention for those students who can fathom the thought-
world permeating his books. Another monumental publication is the
famous Secret Symbols of the Rosicrucians of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth
Centuries (Geheime Figuren der Rosenkreuzer, aus dem 16ten und 17ten
Jahrhundert, Altona, Germany, 1785–88, 2 vols.). Dr. Franz Hartmann
