Fore wo rd

This British Standard, prepared under the direction of the Aerospace Standards
Policy Committee, is one of a series for textiles of a quality suitable for aerospace
purposes. It constitutes a revision of BS 6F 47: 1 983 which is withdrawn. It differs
from the previous edition in that reference to the construction and properties of
tapes with obsolescent widths has been transferred to an appendix, and the
quality requirements defined in the latest edition of BS F 1 00 are also included
as are details of information to be supplied by the purchaser.

WARNING NOTES

1 ) This standard calls for the use of substances and/or test procedures that may
be inj urious to health if adequate precautions are not taken. It refers only to
technical suitability and in no way absolves either the supplier or the user from
statutory obligations relating to health and safety at any stage of manufacture
or use.

2) This standard specifies pentachlorophenyl laurate (PCPL) as the only

approved rot- proofing treatment for aerospace fabrics. Alternative treatments
are under development, and this standard will be updated to delete PCPL as
soon as an approved alternative treatment for aerospace fabrics is available.

A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a
contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.

1 Scope

This British Standard specifies the requirements for cotton tapes for aerospace purposes in a range of
widths.

NOTE 1 The information to be supplied by the purchaser in the contract or order is listed in Appendix A.

NOTE 2 The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover.

NOTE 3 The latest revision of an Aerospace Series standard is indicated by a prefix number.

2 General requirements

In addition to the requirements specified in clauses 3 , 4 , 5 and 6 of this standard, the requirements and
tests of the latest edition of BS F 1 00 as specified in Table 1 shall apply.

Table 1 — General requirements (given in BS F 1 00)

Section of Section title Requirements and tests

BS F 1 00

One General All requirements

Two Quality requirements Requirements for manufacture of narrow fabrics

Requirements for dyed textiles except those related to fabric
intended for coating
Requirements for dimensions and tolerances
Requirements for freedom from corrosive impurities a
(see section 4 of BS F 1 00)
Requirements for freedom from faults in woven narrow fabrics

Three Physical tests Test for determination of number of threads per unit length in
fabrics
Test for determination of the mass of narrow fabrics
Test for breaking strength and extension under force

Four Chemical tests If required by section two:

Test for conductivity of aqueous extract
Test for pH value of aqueous extract
Test for water soluble chloride
Test for water soluble sulfate
a
Applies only to scoured, dyed or rot- proofed fabrics complying with items b) and c) of 5 .1 .

3 Yarn

The tape shall be manufactured from unsized cotton yarns of the following nominal linear densities:

a) warp: 2 ply yarn of resultant linear density 20 tex;

b) weft: singles yarn of linear density 20 tex.

4 Manufacture

4.1 The weave shall be plain.

4.2 The webbing shall be woven on shuttle looms. Shuttleless constructions shall not be permitted.

5 Finish

5.1 General

The tape shall be supplied in one of the following conditions:

a) loomstate;

b) scoured and rot-proofed;

c) scoured, dyed and rot-proofed.

NOTE The finish required should be stated in the contract or order (see Appendix A).

5 .2 Rot-proofing

Where rot-proofing is required, the tape shall be treated with pentachlorophenyl laurate (PCPL) from
aqueous emulsion in accordance with the normal process specified in BS 2087-1, except that the upper limit
for PCPL content shall be 3.5 %.
No other rot-proofing agent shall be permitted.
5.3 Dyeing

Where dyeing is required, the colour shall be specified by reference to a British Standard, e.g. BS 381C, or
otherwise by pattern.
NOTE The colour required should be stated in the contract or order (see Appendix A).
6 Construction and properties

The construction and properties of the tape shall comply with the requirements of Table 2.
NOTE 1 The width required should be stated in the contract or order (see Appendix A).

7 Identification

The tape shall be identified by the number of this British Standard, i.e. BS 7F 47:19901), together with the
width, and, where required, the colour and rot-proofing requirements.
NOTE The identification may be codified: For example, 50 mm wide tape dyed olive drab and rot-proofed may be identified as
BS 7F 47/50 mm/BS 381C No. 298/PCPL.

1)Marking BS 7F 47 on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturer’s declaration of conformity, i.e. a claim by or on

behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is therefore solely
the responsibility of the person making the claim. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third party certification of
conformity, which may also be desirable.
