Some Tips for Beginners about Essay:

1. Structure: At first, you are required to learn the structure of essay:

I. Introduction: it contains 3 parts: grabber, introduction of the topic and thesis statement. Start with
a grabber: quotation or annocdote or facts & figures etc. Then introduce the topic by summarizing your
outline. Finally, write your thesis statement: your stance on the topic...you shouldn't deviate from your
thesis statement till the end.

II. Body: body constitutes almost 70% of your essay. Structure of your body's paragraphs is different
from that of introduction. Again body's paragraphs can be divided into 3 parts: opening/ introductory
sentence i.e reproducing your outline here; analysis of opening sentence using examples, facts & figures,
quotations and references of books etc; concluding sentence by re-connecting to opening sentence of
your paragraph. You must***** use linking words within and between paragraphs: similarly, likewise,
hence, therefore, in addition, consequently etc.

III. Conclusion: at the end, you have to write conclusion. Conclusion also has 3 parts: concluding
sentence, connection to thesis statement and concluding grabber. Be optimistic in the concluding
grabber if asked about any issue.

IV. Similarly, you should know about coherence, clarity, narration, exposition and different types of
essay.

To learn structure of essay, you're required to follow English professionals instead of CSPs.

analytical skills. For this purpose, I would like to advise you that read, read and read. Follow quality news
papers and books: Dawn, Foreign Affairs, The Economist, IPRI, Atlantic Council and Institute of Strategic
Studies Islamabad etc.

3. Demand of the Topic: Thirdly, you should try to understand demand of the topic. For this purpose,
you are required to identify different key concepts in a given statement. After identifying the key
concepts, you need to dissect them. For instance, "Democracy and illiteracy don't run together". Here,
'democracy' and 'illiteracy' are two main concepts. In each paragraph, you have to link both concepts.
You can't write separately about them. If you compromise demand of the topic, you will be rewarded
with F grade even if your essay has good structure and material.

4. Practice: Finally, practice, practice and practice. Practice: try, fail and success. The more you write, the
more you would acquire confidence to write. You are required to write at least one/two paragraphs/day
and one essay/week.
