“Jose Rizal the Movie”
(Reflection Part 2)

The film's subjects are the Spanish government and Jose Rizal's life, in which he overcame
obstacles that molded him into the man he became. Cesar Montano played Jose Rizal, the main character
in the movie. The film tells the story of Rizal's detention and exile. The Spanish imprisoned him as a
result of his two novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, and the allegation that he had inspired
an insurrection. As he meets Taviel, the Spanish soldier in charge of Rizal's case, Rizal is struck by a
number of recollections. Taviel learned that Rizal was innocent. But, the friars who were the main
audience for Rizal's writings intended to end his life. The courtroom scene where Rizal makes his case
and the execution scene at Bagumbayan are the greatest, yet there are other scenes in the film that I find
more memorable. Rizal was a son, a brother, and a friend. He was raised and instructed to lead a
responsible life. Prior to enrolling him in a neighboring school, his mother offered him some fundamental
Spanish lessons. There, he first encountered Spanish abuse. His mother had an eye issue, which
motivated him to do well in his studies when he was sent to Europe to study medicine. He was motivated
to do better in school by his brother Paciano, who had also witnessed the brutality of the Spaniards
firsthand. My favorite part of the anatomy lesson is the scene where Rizal sits in with the male Spanish
and Filipino students.
