Distinctive Attributes Of Academic Language

PRECISION- In academic writing, facts, figures, graphs, illustrations are given precisely. The exactness

and accuracy of the data presented are visible.Writer is advised not to use “several workers” When
he/she can use “10 million workers”.

FOR EXAMPLE
Chemists had attempted to synthesize quinine for the previous hundred years
but all they had achieved was to discover the extreme complexity of the
problem.

The volatile oily liquid beta-chloro-beta-ethyl sulphide was first synthesized

in 1854, and in 1887 it was reported to produce blisters if it touched the skin.
It was called mustard gas and was used at Ypres in 19I7, when it caused
many thousands of casualties.

What is precision in academic language?

Precision in academic texts involves several different things, such
as avoiding vague and indeterminate expressions, or using concise
words. See brief example below: If we look at the way of working in the
classroom, we see a change over time.

precision (n.)
1630s, "a cutting off (mentally), abstraction, freedom from inessential elements,"
from French précision (16c.) and directly from
Latin praecisionem (nominative praecisio) "a cutting off," in Medieval Latin
"precision," noun of action from past-participle stem of praecidere "to cut off,
shorten," from prae "before" (see pre-) + -cidere, combining form of caedere "to cut"
(from PIE root *kae-id- "to strike"). Meaning "quality or state of being precise" is
from 1740.

GROUP 2
REPORT PRESENTATION

A good academic thesis is precise — it makes a specific claim, backed up by concrete, verifiable
evidence. As you begin the writing process, you may have no idea what your own attitude towards
your topic is. Or, you may have a strong emotional reaction to a subject.

Due to the vast number of audiences which a journal attracts, it is important to

keep the work as precise as possible which helps in preventing any
mistranslations and misunderstandings.
