TEXTO PARA A PRÓXIMA QUESTÃO:
What is a prepaid water meter?

There are several types of prepaid water meters but the idea behind them is the same. 2If you cannot
pay upfront, you are unable to access water. 3Water from prepaid water meters typically costs more than water
billed from the utility. As a result, those in most need are denied access to water.
In the United States, the typical prepaid water meter is used in areas without access to water
infrastructure. 4The users are poor, often immigrant workers, who travel long distances to collect water from
the meters. 5To get water you drop quarters into the slot and place your 1bucket at the faucet.
A similar type of meter has been used in South Africa where prepaid water meters replaced previous
free communal standpipes in rural townships. The meter worked by inserting a plastic card with a chip that
could be bought for R60 (US$9). In order to get more water, money can be added to the card at a store.
Other types of prepaid water meters are used in individual homes - this system was used in the United
Kingdom some time ago.

What is life? To the 6physicist the two distinguishing features of 1living systems are complexity and
organization. Even a simple 2single-celled organism, primitive as it is, displays an intricacy and 7fidelity
unmatched by any product of human 8ingenuity. Consider, for example, a 3lowly bacterium. 4Close inspection
9
reveals a complex network of function and form. The bacterium may interact with its environment in a variety
of ways, propelling itself, attacking enemies, moving towards or away from 10external 5stimuli, exchanging
material in a controlled fashion. Its internal workings resemble a vast city in organization. Much of the control
11
rests with the cell nucleus, wherein is also contained the genetic 'code', the chemical blue print that enables
the bacterium to replicate. The chemical structures that control and direct all this activity may involve
molecules with as many as a million atoms strung together in a complicated yet highly specific way. (...)
It is important to appreciate that a biological organism is made from perfectly ordinary atoms. (...) An atom of
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, or phosphorus inside a living cell is no different from a similar atom out-side, and
there is a steady stream of such atoms passing into and out of all biological organisms. Clearly, then, life
cannot be reduced to a property of an organism's constituent parts. Life is not a cumulative phenomenon like,
for example, weight. For though we may not doubt that a cat or a geranium is living, we would search in vain
for any sign that an individual catatom or geranium-atom is living.
Sometimes this appears paradoxical. How can a collection of inanimate atoms be animate? Some people have
argued that it is impossible to build life out of non-life, so there must be an additional, non-material, ingredient
within all living things - a life-force - or spiritual essence which owes its origin, ultimately, to God. This is the
ancient doctrine of vitalism.
An argument frequently used in support of vitalism concerns behaviour. A characteristic feature of living things
is that they appear to behave in a purposive way, as though towards a specific end.

'Noble' Laureate I. B. Singer: The Ultimate Typo

The word typo is short for "typographical error." It refers to a small mistake at the keyboard, such as
typing "teh" instead of "the." But as all students know, these "small" mistakes can be a serious problem for
someone seeking a good grade on a term paper.
In the world of business and I , a typo can mean the II of large amounts of III . In this article
a typo IV emotional significance for people, for V was carved into the gravestone of a famous VI ,

Isaac Bashevis Singer. He won the Nobel Prize VII literature in 1978, and like VIII winners of this
prestigious award, IX was called a Nobel laureate." A X spelled Nobel on the gravestone ___XI the
adjective Noble. Since XII words describe 3Singer, the XIII looks like a pun, a joke XIV on two
different meanings of a XV . A pun on a gravestone seems in terribly bad taste. The mistake resulted in
problems for Singer's family and an irritation for 2all 1who admire Singer's books and respect his memory.
Singer (1904-1991) was born in Poland and immigrated to the United States in 1935. He wrote almost
entirely in Yiddish, the language of Jewish people in Eastern Europe. 5His writings were mainly about the life of
people in the small Jewish towns in Eastern Europe, called 6shtetl, and Polish immigrant life in the United
States. His work combines realism and the mysticism of Jewish folklore in a unique way.

This is not a ticket, but if it were within my power, you would receive two. Because of 4your 1bull headed,

inconsiderate, 3feeble attempt at parking, you have taken enough room for a 20 mule team, 2 elephants, 1
goat and a safari of pygmies from the African interior. The reason for giving you this is so that in the future you

TEXTO PARA A PRÓXIMA QUESTÃO:

Many students 5realize that it is a privilege to attend university but a few think that university is a place
for recreation. It is 1true that most campuses have many fine recreation facilities, but students who 6spend all
their time watching TV or playing ping-pong or going to dances 2soon find out that their work is not
satisfactory. The are usually told that it must improve or they must 7leave school.
Most freshmen don't 8know how to plan their time when they first enter university. They are impressed
with the large number of social activities listed in the university newspaper and the result is that they want to
attend all of them. The 3older students try to warn them of the difficulties that will result, 4but they seldom
believe what other people say. Later they regret what happens and they wish that they had taken the advice of
the older students.
How a person budgets his time is very important. Whoever wants to succeed should plan his time
carefully and stick to his plan. He should allow time for play as well as for work, but not too much.

Feeding garlic to animals consistently blocks cancer. Harvard scientists immunized hamsters against
certain cancers by putting ground-up onions in their drinking water. A leading researcher on garlic is Michael
Wargovich, at Houston's M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. He (I) some mice purified diallyl sulfide from garlic, and
others plain mouse grub, followed by powerful carcinogens. Mice eating the garlic substance had 75 percent
fewer colon tumors. More impressive, (II) given agents that cause esophageal cancer in mice, (III) a single one
getting the diallyl sulfide CAME DOWN WITH cancer!

06. (Uel 1998) In the above text, the underlined words CAME DOWN WITH mean
a) go off.
b) was cured of.
c) saw the doctor about.
d) discovered.

TEXTO PARA A PRÓXIMA QUESTÃO:

1 For anyone who doubts the value of a college education, there is unwavering evidence of a contemporary
phenomenon: the link between education and economic achievement. ln an era when American incomes are
steadily becoming more polarized, the lifetime earning value of a college degree continues to go up.
2 ln recent years, however, this trend has been overshadowed by well-founded concerns about who can afford
to attend college. Students (and their parents) may feel that they cannot afford to pass up college, yet also
that they can barely afford to go. Using the word "crisis" to describe the economic state of higher education,
college administrators are focusing on the strain between access and price - between the need for people to
have a college education in order to compete effectively in the workplace and dramatic increases in tuition.
3 According to the Council for Aid to Education, if tuition rises in the next 20 years as it has in the past 20, 6.7
million students (or half those expected to want it) will not be able to afford higher education. That will
make it much harder for those people when they enter the job market; in turn, that will make it harder for
their children, since the educational achievement of one generation affects the next. After a two-year study,
the council stated that the present economic course of higher education is "unsustainable".
4 Because a college education is often one of the bigger investments anyone makes, concerns about what it
costs and how to pay for it are compelling higher education to rethink how it has operated since soon after
World War ll.

1 This is Michael's story.
2 'It would start with a smack. But then there was no stopping him.
3 He'd lay into me like I was his worst enemy. It was as if he forgot who I was. But he'd usually remember to
hit me where it wouldn't show.
4 When he didn't, I'd be kept off school. If a teacher asked me about a cut or a bruise, I'd just lie.
5 Once he broke my arm. Mum told the hospital I'd had an accident. Finally, a neighbor saw my bruised face,
and reported it.
6 I will always be grateful to my counselor. He said I wasn't to blame. He helped me to feel better about
myself. He was the father I never had.' There are thousands of cases similar to Michael's each year, from
every level of society. But they are only the tip of the iceberg. Thousands more children are the victims of
less obvious forms of cruelty.
7 Some people wouldn't even think of these as abuse. But imagine being constantly shouted at. Or ignored as
if you don't exist. Or criticized for everything you do.
8 The emotional effects can be just as painful as those caused by more obvious forms of abuse including low
self-worth, humiliation, loneliness, depression and an inability to relate to others. Some children have even
been driven to kill themselves.
9 Because of all this, the NSPCC has launched a campaign called 'A Cry For Children'. It's a cry to everyone to
stop and think about the way they behave towards children.
10 To listen to them, talk to them and treat them with respect.
11 And to recognize the impact that any form of cruelty can have on a child. Please answer the cry.
12 If you, or someone you know is suffering from abuse, please call the NSPCC Child Protection Helpline on
0800 800 500 any time, day or night.
13 Or if, after reading this, you would find more information helpful, please call us on 0171 825 2775.
