Description:
• Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, sticks, meter sticks, and
measuring tapes.
• Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe
how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
• Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.
• Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a
standard length unit.

Objective Estimation, measuring and subtraction
Material required
Description:
• Your class will choose an object, estimate the length, measure the correct length and then see how close
their estimation is by working out the difference.
• This activity can be differentiated by asking students to use different units of measurement as well as
measuring and estimating to a whole number, or one or two decimal places.
• To give students an extra challenge we have included a sheet where they must convert between
measurements within the activity.
