Introduction

This document gives a guidance of how to upgrade (flash) the Main


(DSP) and USB firmware of Powerware 9130 series UPS. Available
firmware updates and required software tools can be downloaded from
http://www.powerware.com/software/downloads.asp.

Purpose

Periodically, Eaton releases firmware upgrades for some of its products.


With each new release, new features become available and often, some
issues are improved. Please reference the document Tracking of Modify
table Vx.xx.doc in the firmware upgrade package if you are interested in
knowing what enhancements and changes have been made between
each released version of firmware.

Quick reference

Main (DSP) firmware upgrade via RS-232


1. Shutdown the devices supported by the UPS.
2. Ensure the UPS is in Standby state (output off).
3. Set communication speed of RS-232 port (and USB) in the UPS to
9600bps: Settings  User Settings  Serial Port Configuration 
Port: RS232, Speed: 9600.
4. Connect RS-232 cable between the computer and the UPS.
5. Start Watcher - UpsFlash software.
6. Select COM port and Bit Rate 9600bps and press “Open”
7. Press “Open File”, and select an “S” file to be flashed (e.g. V1.22.S).
8. Press “Flash Normal” and unplug input power cord from the UPS.
9. Wait until “Flash ok” notice will appear and press “Close” button.

Main (DSP) firmware upgrade via USB


1. Shutdown the devices supported by the UPS.
2. Ensure the UPS is in Standby state (output off).
3. Set communication speed of USB port (and RS-232) in the UPS to
9600bps: Settings  User Settings  Serial Port Configuration 
Port: RS232, Speed: 9600.
4. Connect USB cable between the computer and the UPS.
5. Stop LanSafe’s Power Monitor service by Services.msc from
Windows command prompt if USB port is used for UPS monitoring.
6. Start Watcher - UpsFlash software.
7. Select Bit Rate 9600bps and “PowerDevice 1” option from Port
Setting drop down menu and press “Open Port”.
8. Press “Open File”, and select an “S” file to be flashed (e.g. V1.22.S).
9. Press “Flash Normal” and unplug input power cord from the UPS.
10. Wait until “Flash ok” notice will appear and press “Close” button.
11. Start LanSafe’s Power Monitor service by Services.msc form
Windows command prompt if it was stopped.

USB firmware upgrade


1. Set communication speed of USB port (and RS-232) in the UPS to
9600bps: Settings  User Settings  Serial Port Configuration 
Port: RS232, Speed: 9600.
2. Connect USB cable between the computer and the UPS.
3. Start HIDTestProgram software.
4. Select “PowerDevice 1” option from the drop down menu and press
“Open Device”.
5. Press “Select Firmware File”, and select an “s19” file to be flashed
(e.g. PW9130 USB FW_V0.10.usb.s19).
6. Press “Update Firmware” and wait until “Flash ok” notice will appear.
7. Press “Close Device” button and exit from the software.

1 Main (DSP) firmware upgrading

1.1 Requirements
In order to upgrade the main (DSP) firmware of the UPS, you will need:
 a computer with Microsoft Windows operating system (Windows
2000 or newer)
 an RS-232 or USB cable (both are included in the package with the
UPS)
 Watcher – UpsFlash software package (can be downloaded from
http://www.powerware.com/software/downloads.asp)

The software package (.zip file) includes the files:


 Watcher – UpsFlash Vx.x.exe, the DSP firmware upgrade tool
 UPSDeviceList.ini
 Vx.xx.S, the firmware upgrade (e.g. V1.22.S)
 Tracking of Modify table Vx.xx.doc, list of changes (optional)
 1028349 rev. X…, this guide.

Unpack or Extract the package to a temporary directory.

1.2 DSP Firmware Upgrading via RS-232 – Flash Normal


Follow the procedure below while upgrading the DSP firmware of the
UPS via RS-232 cable.

1. If the UPS is feeding any load (computer or other equipment), turn off
the load(s) supported by the UPS. Then command the UPS to
standby state by pushing button for at least three seconds.

In case the UPS is off completely, provide AC supply by plugging the


input power cord to the unit when it should automatically enter to
standby state.

State of the UPS can be verified from the front panel’s UPS Status
menu:

2. Set communication speed of the RS-232 port (and USB) in the UPS
to 9600 bps using the LCD front panel: Go to Settings  User
Settings  Serial Port Configuration  Port: RS232, Speed: 9600.

3. Connect the RS-232 cable between DB-9 connectors of the


computer and the UPS.

4. Start Watcher - UpsFlash software from the computer.

5. Choose the right COM port (typically COM1) and Bit rate “9600”,
then press to open COM port. Choose “Ups Flash” Tab.

6. Press and select “S” file to be flashed and click .

7. Press button when the following Popup Message Box


should appear:

Note. If the message below will appear instead, return to item 1 in this
procedure to verify the cabling, COM port settings and that the UPS is in
standby state.

8. Unplug the input power cord from the UPS and click . The
flashing will begin after a few seconds.

Note. If “Flash firmware NG!” message will appear during the flashing, go
to Chapter 1.3 DSP Firmware Upgrading via RS-232 – Flash Error.

9. The LCD display “Flashing in progress…”. Wait until the “Flash OK”
message will appear. Click and buttons and exit
from the software.

1.3 DSP Firmware Upgrading via RS-232 – Flash Error


This procedure is used when the DSP firmware upgrading via RS-232
port has failed or interrupted with “Flash firmware NG!” message (buzzer
of the UPS may beep all the time).

1. Keep the input power cord disconnected from the UPS.

2. If Watcher - UpsFlash software is not running, start up the software


and choose the right COM port (typically COM1) and Bit rate “9600”,
then press to open COM port.

3. Press button and select “S” file to be flashed (e.g. V1.22.S)


and click .

4. Click button. The DSP flashing should begin after a few


seconds.

5. Wait until the “Flash OK” message will appear. Click and
buttons and exit from the software.

1.4 DSP Firmware Upgrading via USB – Flash Normal


Follow the procedure below while upgrading the DSP firmware of the
UPS through USB cable.

1. If the UPS is feeding any load (computer or other equipment), turn off
the load(s) supported by the UPS. Then command the UPS to
standby state by pushing button for at least three seconds.

In case the UPS is off completely, provide AC supply by plugging the


input power cord to the unit when it should automatically enter to
standby state.

menu:

2. Set communication speed of the USB port (and RS-232) in the UPS
to 9600 bps using the LCD front panel: Go to Settings  User
Settings  Serial Port Configuration  Port: RS232, Speed: 9600.

3. Connect the USB cable between the computer and the UPS.

4. Check that “HID UPS Battery” is visible in Device Manager (Windows


XP: Start  Control Panel  Performance and Maintenance 
System  Hardware tab  Device Manager. Right click “HID UPS
Battery” and select Properties and Details tab to verify VID and PID
of the unit (hexadecimals 0463 and FFFF in this case).

5. If LanSafe Power Management Software is installed on your


computer and a USB port is used for monitoring the UPS, the Power
Monitor service of LanSafe must be stopped while the DSP is
flashed. This is done by running Services.msc from Windows
command prompt.

In Services window click on LanSafe Power Monitor service and


select “Stop the service”.

6. Start Watcher - UpsFlash software from the computer and verify


that Bit Rate “9600” is selected.

7. Select from “Port Setting” drop down menu a “PowerDevice” option


and click . Check that opening the interface is successful
as in the example below and if not try with another “PowerDevice”
option.

If the drop down menu does not provide the matching VID/PID option with
the ones that were seen by Device Manager, UPSDeviceList.ini file in the
software package have to be modified. Double click the .ini file from
Windows Explorer to open it to an editing tool (e.g. Notepad).

Increase device count by one on the second row and add a new device to
the end of the list with correct VID/PID data as in the example below.

7. Press and select “S” file to be flashed and click .

8. Press button when the following message should appear:

Note. If the message below will appear instead, return to item 1 in this
procedure to verify the cabling, USB/RS-232 port settings and that the
UPS is in standby state.

9. Unplug the input power cord from the UPS and click . The
flashing will begin within 30 seconds.

Note. If “Flash firmware NG!” message will appear during the flashing, go
to Chapter 1.5 DSP Firmware Upgrading via USB – Flash Error.

10. Wait until the “Flash OK” message will appear. Click and
buttons and exit from the software.

11. Restart LanSafe Power Monitor service if it was stopped by running


Services.msc from Windows command prompt and there click on
LanSafe Power Monitor and select “Start the service”.

1.5 DSP Firmware Upgrading via USB – Flash Error


This procedure is used when the DSP firmware upgrading via USB port
has failed or interrupted with “Flash firmware NG!” message (buzzer of
the UPS may beep all the time).

1. Keep the input power cord disconnected from the UPS.

2. If LanSafe Power Management Software is installed on your


computer and a USB port is used for monitoring the UPS, the Power
Monitor service of LanSafe must be stopped while the DSP is
flashed. This is done by running Services.msc from Windows
command prompt. In Services window click on LanSafe Power
Monitor service and select “Stop the service”.

3. If Watcher - UpsFlash software is not running, start up the software


and verify that Bit Rate “9600” is selected.

4. Select from “Port Setting” drop down menu a “USB” option with
correct VID and PID, then click and check that opening
the interface is successful.

5. Press button and select “S” file to be flashed (e.g. V1.22.S)


and click .

6. Click button. The DSP flashing should begin after a few


seconds.

7. Wait until the “Flash OK” message will appear. Click and
buttons and exit from the software.

8. Restart LanSafe Power Monitor service if it was stopped by running


Services.msc from Windows command prompt and there click on
LanSafe Power Monitor and select “Start the service”.

2 USB firmware upgrading

2.1 Requirements
In order to upgrade the USB firmware of the UPS, you will need:
 a computer with Microsoft Windows operating system (Windows
2000 or newer)
 a USB cable (included in the package with the UPS)
 HIDTestProgram software package (can be downloaded from
http://www.powerware.com/software/downloads.asp)

The software package (.zip file) includes the files: HIDTestProgramVx.x


.exe, UPSDeviceList.ini, the firmware upgrade (.s19 file) and this guide.
Unpack or Extract the package to a temporary directory.

2.2 Upgrade procedure


Follow the procedure below while upgrading the USB firmware of the
UPS.

1. Set communication speed of the USB port (and RS-232) in the UPS
to 9600 bps using the LCD front panel: Go to Settings  User
Settings  Serial Port Configuration  Port: RS232, Speed: 9600.

2. Connect the USB cable between the computer and the UPS.

3. Check that “HID UPS Battery” is visible in Device Manager (Windows


XP: Start  Control Panel  Performance and Maintenance 
System  Hardware tab  Device Manager. Right click “HID UPS
Battery” and select Properties and Details tab to verify VID and PID
of the unit (hexadecimals 0463 and FFFF in this case).

4. Start HIDTestProgram software from the computer.

5. Select a “PowerDevice” option from the drop down menu with


VID/PID numbers that were seen by Device Manager. Click
and check that the UPS was found.

If the drop down menu does not provide matching VID/PID option,
UPSDeviceList.ini file in the software package have to be modified.
Double click the .ini file from Windows Explorer to open it to an editing
tool (e.g. Notepad).

Increase device count by one on second row and add a new device to the
end of the list with correct VID/PID data as in the example below.

7. Click button. The flashing will begin after a few


seconds.

8. Wait until the “Flash firmware OK” message will appear. Click
and buttons and exit from the software.

2.3 Trouble shooting
