What is a smart grid ?

Smart grid is an energy network that

integrates information system and
communication technologies in view to
improve its operation and develop other
uses such as: self consumption, electric
vehicle and storage.

03
Balance between production
Collecting Information
and consumption, energy
efficiency, cost minimizing

01 02
Adjusting the flow of power
between consumers and
supplier
What is a smart grid

Smart grids can be defined according to four characteristics in terms of:

Flexibility
Energy Balance
management

Economy
Reliability
Energy savings and
Network efficiency and
cost reduction
security improvement

Accessibility
Renewable energy
integration
Difference between a Classical and smart grid

Classical Grid Smart Grid

Electromechanical Digital

One-way communication Two-ways communication

Centralized generation Distributed generation

Limited sensores Sensors throughout

Manual monitoring Self monitoring

Failures and blackouts Adaptive and Islanding

Limited Control Pervasive Control

Manual restoration Self Healing

Microgrid

Distributed generation new network paradigm

4 Local renewable
energy production is used
as a priority.
1 Smart meters: measure in real
time the energy demand at
5 Energy storage system different points of the network.
allow to the produced
energy to be stored and
recirculated according to 2 Forecast of production and
the supply /demand and consumption thanks to
the need of the electrical meteorological data and
network. anticipation of use.

6 The local smart grid (

microgrid) is connected to 3 Energy management system
the main electrical grid and Microgrid
that guarantees an optimal
exchange power and balance between production and
information demand.
Learning objectives

1. Identification of different components/technologies of Smart Grid systems

2. Architecture and standards of Smart Grid system
3. Distributed Generation Resources ( renewable energy sources and storage)

4. Identification of control-room technologies for system-wide remote monitoring,

protection, and risk management of smart grid
5. Use of the Hardware In the Loop (HIL) platform to simulate and validate models
(microgrid /Scada).

Deliverables

At the end of these tutorials you will work in group, to design and simulate a
microgrid using Typhoon HIL in the virtual environment.

- highlight and analyze the behavior of sources and loads

- add SCADA widgets to the model for simulation signals monitoring.

Deliverables:

Project folder:

short report (3 to 4 pages) and Typhoon model .
