System of Linear Equations

 Aside from graphing, there is another way

of solving system of linear equations which
is ELIMINATION METHOD.

 In this method we either add or subtract the

equations in order to get in one variable.
Solve the system by elimination.
Ex.1 3y + 2x = 6
3y + 2x = 6 3(2) + 2x = 6
+ 5y – 2x = 10 6 + 2x = 6
2x = 6 – 6
8y = 16
2x = 0

x=0
Therefore, the solution to the system is
x =0 and y = 2 or ( 0 , 2 )
CHECK
Solve the system by elimination.
Ex.2 4x + 2y = 14
4x - 2y = 14 4(3) + 2y = 14
+ 6x +2y = 16 12 + 2y = 14
2y = 14 – 12
10x = 30
2y = 2

Therefore, the solution to the system is
x = 3 and y = 1 or ( 3 , 1)

Solve the system by elimination.
Ex.3 2x – 7y = 12
2x - 7y = 12 2(-1) – 7y = 12
+ -3x +7y = -11 -2 – 7y = 12
-7y = 12 + 2
-x = 1
- 7y = 14

x = -1
y = -2
Therefore, the solution to the system is
x = -1 and y = -2 or ( -1, -2)

Solve the system by elimination.
