“Olympic sports”
Some people are so interested in sports that they want to make it their main livelihood. Sometimes they only get paid
for their travels and equipment, but if they keep improving their results, there is a fair chance they could go to the world
competitions, which improves their chances of earning more money. The highest achievement for sportsmen is usually
to participate in the Olympic Games and win a gold medal. The Olympic Games are performed every four years, but not
all the different kinds of sports which exist are represented there; however new disciplines are added every time the
games are held. The Olympic Games are named after the city in Greece where they take place for the first time in the
year 776 B.C. and they were held there every four years for a long period of time. The intentions of the games were to
allow the best sportsmen in the country to compete, and their ideal was to promote perfect men both in body and soul
(as the games at that time were only for men). Another idea of the games was to keep peace during the competitions, as
there were often minor wars going on at the time. The contemporary tradition of the games started in 1896, in Athens.
The initiator was Pierre de Coubertin. Since then, the event has taken place every four years, except during the world
wars. Since 1924, a special winter Olympics has been held. The International Olympic Committee is now managing the
games from its seat in Lausanne, Switzerland. The well-known symbol of the games is the five intertwined different

“Surfing”
There are waves in India all year round averaging 3 to 5 feet but the season for big waves (8 feet plus) is May
through September. This is the pre-monsoon and monsoon season. At this time the surf will range from 8 to 15 feet
and bigger - often blown out and messy but sometimes the conditions are fantastic - super glassy and offshore
winds, at which time you can expect some world class waves.
On the west coast the swell direction is usually best when coming from the south or west, although an occasional
north swell does get good. On the east coast the swell is almost always from the south or slight southeast direction.
Along the 7000 kilometers of coastline in India there are at least 200 surfable river mouths. River mouths usually
have distinct and consistent sand bar formations created by the river flow and these make for very good breaks - like
waves - closing out when it gets big but lots of fun on smaller days. Then there are the bays, coves and points on the
coast. How many are there? Too many to count and most have never been surfed. October through December the
From January through April, there are sometimes bigger swells both on the east and west coast created by small
storm systems and somedays we will get waves up to 6 and 7 feet, depending. Mornings are almost always glassy
until about 10:30 AM and many mornings have off shore winds, sometimes lasting the whole day.

“SCUBA DIVING”
India is a large country with 8000 kilometres/5000 miles of coastline. India is made up of many islands, both
in the Andaman and Arabian Seas. This means that when diving in India you can expect plenty of amazing
dive sites that offer incredible underwater diversity. Goa, the smallest and richest state on India's west
coast, has easy access to the Arabian Sea. Diving off Goa provides divers with the opportunity to glide over
lush coral gardens and pinnacles, as well as dive a variety of shipwrecks. Lakshadweep is a remote
archipelago off India's southwestern coast just above the Maldives. Dive sites near Lakshadweep offer
colourful reefs, overhangs, swim-throughs and big fish action. The remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands,
between India and Thailand, boast vibrant coral reefs, huge schools of fish and pristine dive conditions.
Pondicherry, on India's eastern coast, has untouched and largely unexplored reefs and wrecks. In this
populous country, you'll find underwater exploration as intriguing as exploring India's rich heritage and
culture.
Colony collapse disorder first struck honey bees in the United States in late two thousand six. Over the next
two years, beekeepers lost more than one-third of their honey bees. Scientists in the United States and
other countries have been working to explain the mysterious disappearances of bees. Now, a new study
suggests that several viruses may act together. Scientists from the University of Illinois and the United States
Department of Agriculture did the study. Their report appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy
of Sciences. The team compared bees from affected colonies with those from healthy colonies. They were
looking for differences in gene expression in the guts of the bees. The scientists found that the affected bees
had a number of viruses from a group called picorna-like viruses. The infections observed in the bees
included Israeli acute paralysis virus and deformed wing virus. Tiny insects likely play a big part in spreading
the viruses. Varroa mites have been causing serious problems in bee colonies in the United States since the
late nineteen eighties. These mites carry picorna-like viruses. The viruses appear to harm the bees' ability to
use their genetic material to produce proteins needed to fight infections. Researcher Reed Johnson, now at
the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, says the study suggests that the damaged proteins are unable to
respond effectively when attacked. University of Illinois Professor May Berenbaum says it appears that bees
could deal with one or two viruses at the same time, but not three or four. She says the picorna-like viruses
"hijack" the ribosome in cells. Ribosomes are structures in which proteins are made. As a result the
ribosome produces only viral proteins. The professor says ribosome is central to the survival of any
organism. If it is compromised, then the bees could not defend themselves against pesticides or fungal
infections or bacteria or poor nutrition. These have all been identified as possible causes of the collapse
disorder. Spanish researchers, for example, recently said they suspected a parasitic fungus which has been
found among affected bees in Spain. Bees add billions of dollars in value to many crops worldwide. For now,
beekeepers have been doing their best to try to protect their colonies. And that's the VOA Special English
