CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Career may be regular occupation or profession in which one is making a living. Career

preference is that the occupation with the best positive valence among alternative variety of work

value. Planning for career is extremely essential for the peaceful living and quality of life. It

provides the premise of the individual’s future life, his social recognition and eventually contributes

to the development of a country through proper utilization of human resources.

Making a career choice is a significant milestone in every student's life. It is closely linked to

the future direction of the student and appears to be a determinant of future income levels, lifestyle

and consequently build the personality, demeanor and outlook of students. It is important for

students to weigh several factors before making a career choice, as this reduces the cost of trial and

avoids being regretful in the future.

Nowadays, the major problems of making career choices for high school students is lack of

guidance. For immature high school students, making the right career choice is not an easy task, as

they may go with the flow or make the wrong choice on a whim. In terms of the different strategies

in making appropriate career choices the students fairly recognize plenty of external factors that

greatly contribute in their way of choosing the professions that are in line with their personal

knowledge, skills, and interests. It enables them to identify their short and long-term goals once they

already choose a certain career path. It is necessary to understand and comprehend that choosing an

appropriate career path is a complex process which needs a thorough evaluation of the different

factors that influence a student’s career decision-making process (Lupaas and Farin, 2021).

This research considers family members’ influence on career choices which includes parents,

siblings, and family unit members in line with (Mtemeri, 2017). Career planning is influenced by so

many socio-economic and personality factors like sex, family size, education and occupation of

parents, social environment and availability of job opportunities. Availability of information of

various types or areas of careers is undoubtedly helpful for the learners. Because very often it is seen

that almost all of the students are unknown about certain areas of career (Bharadwaja et.al., 2017).

Almost everyone will eventually have to deal with the challenge of the occupational choice

problem, yet, choosing study programs is when students are most likely to run into this issue. Many

people, especially students, hold the view that choosing a course of study is the main reason why

students fail to find their ideal future employment.

In this study, the researchers opted to investigate the influences of mothers, fathers, siblings,

friends, skills or talent, future status, and societal differences on Grade 11 and grade 12 ABM

students in Barotac Viejo National High School.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers proposed the study with the title “Investigating the Factors Influencing

Career Choices of ABM Students.” The written work primarily aims to determine the factors

influencing career choices among ABM students of Public Secondary High School in Poblacion,

Barotac Viejo Iloilo.

Specifically, it has the following objectives;

1. To know the reasons why the participants chose ABM strand.

2. To know the advantages and disadvantages of choosing ABM strand.

3. To determine the usefulness of choosing ABM strand in their future career.

4. To identify the factors that highly influenced career choices of ABM students.

5. To determine what is the relation of ABM strand to the future course of the

respondents.

Research Questions

This study seek answers to the following questions:

RQ1. What are the reasons of the participants in choosing the said strand?

RQ2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of choosing ABM strand?

RQ3. What is the usefulness of choosing ABM strand in the future career of the respondents?

RQ4. What are the factors that highly influenced the career choices of ABM students?

RQ5. What is the relation of ABM strand to the future course of the respondents?

Theoretical Framework

The proposed study with the title “Investigating the Factors Influencing Career Choices of

ABM students.” Is anchored to the theory of career choices. This theory was popularized by the

theorist John Holland. The theory of career choices was proposed in year 1959.

John Holland Theory of Career Choices (RAIASEC) maintains that in choosing a career,

people prefer jobs where they can be around others who are like them. They search for environment

that will let them use their skills and abilities.

In the environment where you can relate to one another; communication is a vital part of an

individual’s workplace. In addition, interest and abilities should be anchored to one’s career choice

in the future. Instinctively, the Theory of Career Choices it can determine the factors influencing

their career choices and to know if the chosen career of ABM learners will make them comfortable

with such profession if their abilities and interests will benefit them in the future. Also, they have to

find a suitable and comfortable environment where they can perform and work effectively.

Family-parents influence the level of education or training that their children aachieve the

knowledge they have aabout work and different accupations the beliefs and attitudes they have to

working and the motivation they have to succeed, parents want their children to find happiness and

success in life and one factor whicch influences happiness and success is career choice also indicates

that when students feel supported and loved by their parents.

Friends influences career choices, having a companion could help students learn together about the

lessons tackled within the scope of that course.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study aims to determine the factors influencing career choices of ABM learners. The

researchers will focus on how does the given factors influences their future career.

To answer the research problems of this study, a survey questionnaire was developed to

determine the career preferences of the ABM learners and a face-to-face interview on the

respondents that involves some of their personal informations such as their name, age, gender, grade

level and stand, if what factors influences their chosen career and why did they chose it.

The researchers will accumulate at least 15 to 20 male and female of ABM learners from

various grade enrolled in Barotac Viejo National High School (BVNHS), school year 2022-2023.

The learners or respondents will be interviewed face-to-face to avoid scripted answers.

Subsequently, the gathered data will be analyzed to determine the factors influencing career

choices of ABM learners. This study will be conducted in Barotac Viejo, Iloilo on May 2023.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to provide valuable information about the factors influencing career choices

of ABM students. And to provide valuable information to the following stakeholders:

Parents. The result of this study envisioned to give parents an idea the importance of career

preferences of the students’ Postsecondary plans.

Researchers. The result of the study serves as reference materials for future research studies

on the relationship of career preferences and academic performance of the ABM students.

Students. The result of this study enlightened the students on the significance of career

choices as it exerts a profound influence on an individual’s life.

Teachers. It is important for them to know what teaching style and strategies they should use

to the students, because they will be the one providing the knowledge to the children.

Economy. This study will cover a wide range of economic crises, poses major challenges to

our students, and other related topics thus it can contribute to a possible solution to these issues.

Definition of Terms

For clarity the terms used in the study were defined as follows:

Factors – a circumstance, fact, or influence that contributes to a result or outcome.

Career choice – The broad opportunities that exists for life long vocations. These vocations are set

out in a framework of strategies moving toward personal goals. Fields of vocational, academic, and

sociological endeavors are explored for the purpose of satisfying personal, economic, and

intellectual goals.

Environment – The complex physical factors that make up our surroundings (Britannica, 2002),

and in turn act upon us. For the purposes of this study they would include the forces of family,

political, social, and economic issues that both typical and non-typical students may deal with on a

day-to-day basis.

Motivation – Forces acting on or within a person causing an initiation of behavior (Britannica 2002)

or what it is that moves us. In this study we will deal with the issues that help or hinder students in

making career choices.

Opportunity – Those choices in one’s life which are exposed either in a subtle or obvious manner.

These choices or paths give the individual a selection between two or Career Choice Factors 19

more outcomes. The outcomes of one’s choosing may or may not exceed one’s present abilities.

Personality – A characteristic way of thinking, feeling and behaving (Britannica, 2002). The

personality is the collection of impressions in the appearance of the student’s body and the

impressions believed to have been made on others, good or bad. One’s personality may embrace

attitudes and opinions that affect the way we deal with interactions of people and, in particular to

this study, the situations of choosing a career.

Quality of life – The depth in the content of richness and fullness in our dayto-day existence. This

includes observed and unobserved criteria that contribute to the fulfillment with our expectations

and aspirations.

Influence – to affect or change someone or something in an indirect but usually important way.

Skills – is the acquired capacity to take action with clarity and good execution, frequently within a

predetermined window of time or energy.

Strand – a strand is an area of study under an academic track that senior high school students must

take to prepare for their chosen degree in college.

Accountancy Business and Management (ABM) – Accounting Business and Management strand

or ABM strand seeks to prepare the young business leaders of tomorrow. ABM paves the way for

business- related college degrees.

Theoretical Framework

This research is related to the Law of influence by John C. Maxwell.

According to Maxwell, authentic leadership cannot be awarded: it must be earned through influence,

“Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less.”

As the leader of the house, the parents or guardians should be a good influence to their child by

guiding them weighing the impact of others if it is positive or negative, which is a big factor in the

decision making of the career choice of their child.
