ABOUT HIS LIFE

• Chanakya, also called  Vishnugupta, Hindu statesman and


philosopher who wrote a classic treatise on polity, Artha-
shastra a compilation of almost everything that had been written in
India up to his time regarding artha (property, economics, or
material success).

• He was born into a Brahman family and received his education


at Taxila(now in Pakistan). He is known to have had a knowledge of
medicine and astrology, and it is believed he was familiar with
elements of Greek and Persian learning introduced into India by
Zoroastrians. Some authorities believe he was a Zoroastrian or at
least was strongly influenced by that religion.

• Chanakya became a counselor and adviser to Chandragupta founder


of the Mauryan empire of northern India, but lived by himself. He
was instrumental in helping Chandragupta overthrow the
powerful nanda dynasty at Pataliputra, in the Magadha region.

1.Chanakya was the pioneer of political science in ancient India, whose works are
of great relevance even today.

2.He served as an advisor to the great Chandragupta Maurya and played a vital role
in the emergence of the Mauryan Empire.

3.It wouldn’t be wrong to say that he played guardian to the Mauryan dynasty
founder and was instrumental in the formation of the empire.

4.His vision, diplomacy and wisdom helped the Mauryan Empire expand its
boundaries.

5. He also served Bindusara, son of Chandragupta.

6.It is also believed that Chanakya dreamt of Akhand Bharat.

7. He knew it was important for all regional kings to remain united so that they
could collectively fight foreign invasion. 8.He went about building alliances with
rulers of different states with his diplomatic astuteness and thus was able to
strengthen the roots of the Mauryan empire.
