ABSTRACT:
Terminalia chebula (combretaceae) is a medicinal plant widely distributed throughout India,
Burma and Srilanka. Many Indian plants have been used from time immemorial to treat
various diseases and infections in traditional medicinal systems. Terminalia chebula is one of
the most commonly used plants in traditional systems of medicine in Indian sub-continent.
Terminalia chebula is also called the ‘King of Medicine’ in Tibet and is always listed at the
top of the list in Ayurvedic Materia Medica due to its extraordinary power of healing.

Terminalia chebula also called as chebulic myrobalan or myrobalan. In Hindi it is called as


Harad and Haritaki. Haritaki has a prime place among the medicinal herbs in India and is
used since ancient times. Myrobalan belongs to a family of combretaceae. It is found in
tropical and sub-tropical regions of East Asia. It mainly contains active constituents like
steroids, flavonoids, tannins, reducing sugar, belleric acid, bellericoside, chebulinic acid,
chebulin, gallic acid, ethyl gallate, punicalgin, terflavin A, terchebin, leunolin and tannic acid.
It is mainly used as antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic, anti-inflammatory,
antihyperglycemic agents, anti-cancerous, antimutagenic and antihyperlipidemic activity.

Terminalia chebula is used in India as well as in other countries of Asia and Africa. It is used
as traditional medicine because of its wide spectrum pharmacological activities and
biological active ingredients present in it. Different parts of plant have different therapeutic
effects. It is used as laxative, purgative, blood purifier and antioxidant. It prevents cardiac
damage thereby used in heart disease as well as in kidney disease. Tablet is prepared by
using fruit extract of Terminalia chebula by the process of wet granulation method.
Formulated tablets were evaluated for its hardness, friability, thickness, weight variation,
disintegration and dissolution. Result obtained from evaluation were promising. Purpose of
the formulation was to gather the traditional knowledge on pharmacological and
phytochemical analysis of extract and the information of isolated compounds.
