SIERPINSKI CARPET

1. Start with a square like the one to the right (Stage 0). Each side has a length of
1 unit.
a. What is the area of the square?

Area= l x w
=1x1
= 1 square unit
2. Take each shaded square and divide it into nine equal, smaller squares. Then
remove the central square.
a. What is the area of one of the nine smaller squares?

Area = 1/3 x 1/3

= 1/9 square units
b. How many shaded squares are there?

8 shaded square

c. After removing the center square, what is the area of the shaded region?
8
area shaded square. 8/1 x 1/9 = ---- square units
9

3. Repeat this process for the eight shaded squares left behind. We could then do this again to all the
smaller remaining squares and so on.
a. Draw the next stage in the space below.

b. What is the area of one of the smallest squares?

1
A = 1/9 * 1/9 = ---- square units
81
c. How many shaded squares in the drawing?

64 shaded square

d. What is the area of the shaded squares?

area of shaded square= 64/1 x 1/81 = 64/ 81 square units
