The Famous Verb to be – Use and Form
The “famous” verb to be is the most important content in English, because it informs all personal
information of somebody (a person) or something (a thing, an object):
- name (first name, middle name, last name, surname) – Ilana Fernandes Samesima.
- age – I’m 37 years old.
- feelings – I’m fine, thanks!
- family relationship – My daughter’s name’s Maria Mai or Maria Mai is my daughter.
- social relationship – You’re my student and I’m your English teacher.
- profession – I’m an English teacher.
- zip code, classroom number, telephone number (numbers in general) – My home phone number is
34643398.
- adjectives – I’m short.
- marital status – single, in a relationship, engaged, married, divorced, widow.
- nationalities – I’m Brazilian.
- hometown or place of birth – I’m from Bom Despacho, Minas Gerais.
- dates, birthday, etc – Today is Monday.
My birthday is in September.
My favorite day of the week is Saturday.
- weather – It’s hot in Summer
- telling the time – What time is it? - It’s 04:00.
