Of Conduct

that in the course of my association with the
Ministry of Education and Human Resource
Development….
I will,
Treat all children with respect regardless of race, colour, sex,
language, disability, religion, national, ethnic or social origin;
Provide a welcoming, inclusive and safe environment for all
children;
Encourage children to speak up about issues that affect them,
including any concerns they might have about violence,
harassment or bullying, and take their concerns seriously;
Immediately report all suspicions, disclosures, or allegations of
child abuse (within or external to the school system) or any
breaches of the Child Protection Policy and Code of Conduct, in
accordance with the MEHRD’s reporting procedures;
Comply with the MEHRD Child Protection Policy and national child
protection laws;
Inform my supervisor if I observe any form of misconduct that may
potentially harm students;
Inform my supervisor if I am investigated for any crime or charged with any
criminal offence; and
Co-operate fully in any investigations into allegations of child abuse and/or
breaches of the Child Protection Code of Conduct.
I will not;
Use inappropriate language towards children that is harassing, abusive,
insulting, sexually provocative, demeaning or offensive;
Physically abuse a child or use any form of corporal punishment, including
hitting, slapping or caning;
Impose any harmful, degrading or humiliating punishment on children or
engage in behaviour to shame, humiliate, belittle or degrade a child;
Use children for domestic or other labour which is inappropriate given their
age or developmental stage, which interferes with their time available for
education and recreational activities, or which places them at risk of injury
Exploit students by using them for private or personal service;
Develop a relationship with any student that could be seen as favouritism
or amount to “grooming” behaviour (for example, offering gifts);
Sleep close to unsupervised children unless absolutely necessary, in which
case I must obtain my supervisor’s permission, and ensure that another
adult is present;
Act in a sexually provocative manner or make comments of a sexualised
nature to or in the presence of a child;
Engage in any form of sexual activity with a child. I understand that any
sex act between a teacher and a student under the age of 18 is a crime
under the Solomon Islands Penal Code, even if the student consents;
Sexually exploit a child, including paying for sexual services, or engaging a
child in any sexual activity in exchange for money, gifts, grades,
preferential treatment, or anything else that they or their family needs;
Consume alcohol or drugs, or be under the influence of alcohol or drugs
in the school environment or at school events where students are
present;
Spend time outside of work requirements with a student, unless under
circumstances known and approved by my supervisor;
Use computers, mobile phones, video or digital cameras or any other
technology to create, view or download child pornography or to
communicate with a child in an inappropriate manner;
I confirm that I have read and understood the
MEHRD’s Child Protection Policy and that I agree to
comply with the Policy and Code of Conduct.

I understand that a breach of the Policy or Code may


provide grounds for disciplinary action, including
possible termination of my employment and de-
registration. I also understand that a breach of the
Policy or Code could result in criminal prosecution.
