The dates given with the tables refer to the date the survey was
carried out. The results are based on nationwide representative sam-
ples of adults. The definition of "adults" is not the same in all countries
or for all research organizations. The tables indicate which age group
was questioned in the survey (e.g., 16 + or 18+). When this indication
is missing, the original publication only mentioned a sample of adults.
The respondents were questioned either in person at their homes or by
telephone (indicated by "tel."). When the size of the sample was
specified in the original publication, this information is reproduced.
Questions about the data and requests for additional information
should be addressed to C. de Boer, The Polls Archives, Oude Hoog-
straat 24, 1012 CE Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Great Britain-SOC: From what you have read or heard, how safe do you
think nuclear power stations are?
Great Britain-NOP: There has been much discussion in the news recently
about the nuclear waste reprocessing plant at Sellafield in Cumbria. The plant
has been criticised for its number of leaks of radio-active matter, but the
government claims that the leaks are not significant and that the plant is safe.
Do you personally think Sellafield is safe enough or not?
Greece-Eurodim: A few years ago, DEI [the Public Power Company], to face
the high prices and the shortage of oil, had decided to build nuclear plants for
the production of electric energy. Nevertheless, some are afraid that the nu-
clear plants are dangerous. Do you think that they are:

safe, or not so safe? (tel., 18+)
