This poem imaginatively reconstructs historical events regarding Alfonso I d’Este, the Duke of
Ferrara (1476-1534) [for historical information, see

The Duke, a widower, is the speaking I of the poem and is described as entertaining an emissary
who has come to negotiate the second marriage of the Duke himself to the daughter of a powerful
family. While accompanying his guest through the palace, Browning’s sinister and virile character
of Alfonso stops before a portrait of his deceased wife, a young and fascinating young woman. At
this moment the Duke starts reminiscing about his dead wife and her sitting for the portrait.
Intriguingly, his musings are intermingled with reproachful references to her apparently
disgraceful behavior and betrayal. He actually hints that she flirted with other men and
disgregarded his noble “nine-hundred-years-old name.” As this dramatic monologue unfolds, we
suspect with ever-more chilling certainty that the Duke was responsible for his wife’s tragic
passing away.
“My Last Duchess” is a fifty-six line poem written in rhyming pentameters and strategically
relying on the structure of enjambement (a device by which sentences and other grammatical units
do not necessarily conclude at the end of a line or stanza). This means that the rhymes do not
create a sense of closure, but rather work as subtle innuendoes behind the Duke’s veiled
confession. By delving into and recreating an aristocratic setting from the Italian Renaissance,
Browning powerfully dealt with questions concerning political power, gender relations and
psychological fears or obsessions. ----
