Assignment: 1 – Short paragraph questions

1.1 The city was initially only occupied by humans but now it has become a home to a number of different
species. These are species that used to inhabit the forests but have now gone back to the cities and
made their home amongst humans. The second point is that humans have taken very good care of
the environment. As a result of this, animals were able to survive and then eventually adapt in these
environments. The prevention of activities such as hunting and the implementation of other protective
measures have allowed animals to grow and multiply naturally. (Word-count: 98)

1.2 This whole text basically highlights the resurgence of wildlife in urban cities. The first example is, the
humans has interfered so much with the lives of animals, however if they try to study and understand
the behavior of them, the impact may change. The second example is, the animals had the strong
adaptive ability to change. Non-native species started to alter the definition of wilderness. The last
example is, Matthews stated that people should be considerate and sustain the current environment
for future use. Computer statistics shows the growth in unforeseen events such as global warming.
The rise of sea level will have a major impact in the coming years. (Word-count: 111)

1.3 One non-academic feature from the text is, “…cooling off”. The author used this phrase to
demonstrate how comfortable the animals were around the environment. Another non-academic
feature is, ‘’…booming”. The number in population growth started growing rapidly, hence the author
used that language to emphasize his statement. The last non-academic feature is, ‘’…marvel’’. The non-
academic word has been quoted from an entertainment source, which is a movie distribution platform.
The author shows the connection, of enjoyment that humans get from the site of animals on the
environment. (Word-count: 88)

1.4 Urban sprawl is caused by many factors, but only two will be mentioned in this answer. The first
cause is that city centers have very high land costs whereas the city outskirts and going further out of
the city you find that the land costs are much lower. So this is one of the reasons people move out of the
city center into the outer lands (Brody, 2013). The other cause is the rise in population growth. The
more the population grows, the city centers then fail to accommodate the large numbers of people that
are there. So this results in people moving out of the densely populated areas into the outer suburbs
that have much less people (Rafferty, 2022). (Word-count: 121)

1.5 Yes the habitats of humans can coexist with those of animals. For example, with the new
technologies that we have today, scientists should be able to pick up diseases that are passed on by
different animals and insects. The amount of research on relationships between animals allows us to
cohabit with animals because diseases can be predicted before they even happen. The spread of West
Nile virus would have been prevented should enough studies been done on migrating birds before they
caused any damage. Animals such as cows share their habitat with. Humans and many benefits to both
parties exist as a result of the cohabitation. Spotted genets are another example of animals that can
happily share their habitats with humans. (Word-count: 121)
