LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK eye surgery is the best comprehended and most usually executed laser
refractive surgery to correct vision troubles. Laser- assisted situ
keratomileusis (LASIK) can be an option other than spectacles or contact lenses
as its effect remains permanent which means that there will be only a 10%
chance that one will have to wear spectacles after the surgery has been done.
During LASIK surgery, a special type of cutting laser is used to precisely change
the shape of the dome- shaped clear tissue at the front of your eye(cornea) to
enhance vision. In eyes with normal vision, the cornea bends(refracts) light
precisely onto the retina at the rear of the eye. But with
nearsightedness(myopia), farsightedness(hyperopia) or astigmatism, the light is
bent wrongly, responding in blurred vision which can later turn you blind if the
correct methods or surgeries are not done in time. Lasik Eye surgery is one of
the most advanced technologies which can improve the sense of vision. It has its
own set of advantages and disadvantages in terms of social, political, economic
and moral/ethical.

For social impacts, there are both positive and negative impacts/effects on our
eye through LASIK Eye Surgery. Around the world there are so many people
who have issues in seeing and are having blurred vision which makes them
disconnected from the people around them as they may be made fun of. The
LASIK Eye Surgery helps them to see better than before as they help them
achieve their dreams which had sounded impossible for them. It also brings up a
sense of competition between all which helps others bring up a much better
work than before. However, there is a disadvantage to it like it will create
enemies who may affect you eventually. Other than that, there is always
unfairness between all like if a person who could see clearly before and is having
this surgery done, then there is superiority of that person over others.
Secondly, not everyone has access to this surgery as only the rich can afford it.
It costs around Rs.30,000-Rs.80,000 in India. Plus, this can only be done once
somebody is 18 or above or else it can cause harm to the eye if this surgery is
done before the age of 18.

For political impacts, the Lasik eye Surgery helps to shape the government and
its policies, for example: what if somebody wants to move into another from
their country just because of one or two factors are not available to them.
These policies help in shaping the government and the country. Also, the
business/governments who are doing these surgeries are doing this legally and
only for those who have been prescribed by doctors or are really in need of it.
Also, the Indian Army does not allow people to join the rank if they have had
LASIK Eye Surgery even though the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy allows it.
This shows how only the ones in need can have it which removes all the
unfairness with others, but government of countries have been using these
surgeries done to athletes to cheat in competitions like shooting and others
which were found, and they were disqualified. This incident has continuously
happened and brought the countries' name down many times. Cheating
continuously happens by having Lasik eye surgeries and it is not able to stop.

For economic impacts, the advantages are there will be an economical rise due
to the huge amount of people trying to improve their bad vision, because these
products which improves our vision would be extremely expensive and with a
huge amount of people buying it the economy will rise heavily. These surgeries
help improve vision and can be useful during business. These surgeries can also
help in producing more advanced technology which can help businesses improve
and make new changes in the procedure. However, there are disadvantages to
face as some countries have said that these LASIK eye surgeries are illegal so
the economies who are having these surgeries done will turn it into a black
market which is very bad for the economy as if the government finds that a
black market is happening, they can ban the business from the country.

LASIK Eye Surgery should be done but only by the patients who have been
prescribed by the doctor as this gives them equal opportunity to compete with
normal people. The government needs to allow them as they are helpful but again
only for those who really need it. Society should not exclude people having these
as they also are humans but have a defect with their eyes. LASIK Eye Surgeries
are advised to be done after the age of 18 and not before that. LASIK Eye
Surgeries are to some extent good for us and our eye/body but can have side
effects which may affect our eye’s cornea, reflexes, and to some extent it can
worsen the vision but that has a 10%-12% chance as it is known to be one of the
safest eye surgeries to be done in countries.
