3. Tooth profile
341 Types and classes
‘Tooth profile is organized into two classes, i.e., standard tooth profile and modified tooth profile,
Modified tooth profile is mainly adopted by press driving gears of which module is 5mm or more.
Standard tooth profile is adopted by other gears.
3.2. Tooth profile and dimensions of the standard tooth
Tooth profile curve of the standard tooth shall be an involute curve of which standard pressure
angle dys 20°. Fig. 4 gives the tooth profile and the dimensions of basic rack.

Tooth Profile and Standard Dimensions
‘Tooth profile of the modified tooth shall be a curve obtained by making a small relief at the tooth tip of
the standard tooth. Fig. 2 (a) gives the tooth profile and dimensions of basic rack. It should be noted,
however, the profile of a cut- modified tooth using a Nile's grinding machine may follow Fig. 2 (b).

3.3.1 Exclusion of applying modified tooth (modified tooth tip).
‘When a gear shall be applied a modified tooth profile (modified tooth tip), and yet modification of
tooth is not easily possible, the modification may be omitted. However, specified tooth mating and,
etc. must be recorded and submitted to Engineering Dept. for approval. Implement must be
‘conducted after obtaining approval of Engineering Dept.
3.4 Tooth profile of helical gears
Helical gears shall be of normal angle. Tooth profile and dimensions of the basic rack can be found
by replacing with af, and m with my i
3.5 Sharp comers

Incase of ground gears sharp comers as shown in the sketch at right are not
allowed.
When these corners are inevitable with a grinding machine (such as Maag 0°

44 Precautions in practice and indications for crowing and relieving
4.44 Tooth contact
Configurations of crowning and relieving change according to the shape of template of a processing
machine. The required initial contact is 50% or more in terms of tooth trace direction. If the initial
contact is smaller than the aforementioned one, correction shall be conducted.
44.2 Surface subjected to crowning and relieving
For the surface to be crowned or relieved, the following conditions shall be satisfied.
1) For one set of mating surfaces, either one shall be crowned or relieved,
2) In principle, a gear with a smaller number of teeth shall be subjected to crowing or relieving,

COMMENTARY
This commentary is not part of the standard. It is provided in order to explain various details about
the standard.
4. Why the standard was established
This standard was established to give commentary fo tooth profile and its standard dimensions.
2 Intent of the major revisions in 15 June 1990
Tooth Profile and Standard Dimensions
‘Whole depth of tooth was changed to 1.35 m from 1.25 m. |
3 _ Intent of the major revisions in 1 September 1997
Deddendum was changed to 1.35 m from 1.25 with Giketsu-320-006. Old 3.3(duplicated) was
changed to 3.5.
4 _ Intent of the major revisions in 1 May 2000
Measures for overseas production, "3.3.1 Exclusion of applying modified tooth (modified tooth tip)”
was added. j
5 _ Intent of the latest revisions
Modification of tooth tip is practiced to reduce noise as one of its purposes. However, for gears with
addendum modification coefficient 0.50~ 0.53 and with a smaller number of teeth, when the tooth tip
was modified in a conventional way, the mating rate decreases extremely and the noise increases,
‘Therefore, the amount of tip modification had been changed according to an agreement with the gear
cutting supplier. This agreement with the supplier was reflected into this revision,
6 — Major revisions
The major revisions are as follows:
a) The tip modification amount in the case of addendum modification coefficient 0.50~ 0.53 was i
added to Figure 2.
b) Revision contents were summarized in this Commentary.
