education prior to attending university or college. This may be accomplished either at public or government-
operated schools, or at private schools. These 12 years of schooling or their equivalent may also be completed
outside the USA, thus giving foreign students the opportunity to pursue the benefits of the American education
system and obtain a quality American education. Perhaps one of the most impressive facts is that a large

It is often said that books are always a good friends and reading is an active mental process. Unlike TV,
books make you use your brain. By reading, you think more and become smarter. Reading improves
concentration and focus. Reading books takes brain power. It requires you to focus on what you are reading
for long periods. Unlike magazines, Internet posts or e-Mails that might contain small pieces of information.
Books tell the whole story. Since you must concentrate in order to read, you will get better at concentration.
Many studies show if you do not use your memory; you lose it. Reading helps you stretch your memory
muscles. Reading requires remembering details, facts and figures and in literature, plot lines, themes and
characters.
Reading is a good way to improve your vocabulary. Do you remember that when you were at
elementary school you learned how to infer the meaning of one word by reading the context of the other
words in the sentence? While reading books, especially challenging ones, you will find yourself exposed to
many new words.
Reading is a fundamental skill builder. Every good course has a matching book to go with it. Why?
Because books help clarify difficult subjects. Books provide information that goes deeper than just
classroom discussions By reading more books you become better informed and more of an expert on the
topics you read about. This expertise translates into higher self-esteem. Since you are so well-read, people
look to you for answers. Your feelings about yourself can only get better.
Books give you knowledge of other cultures and places. The more information you have got, the richer
your knowledge is. Books can expand your horizons by letting you see what other cities and countries have
to offer before you visit them.

A rather surprising geographical feature of Antarctica is that a huge freshwater lake, one of the world's
largest and deepest, lies hidden there under four kilometers of ice. Now known as Lake Vostok, this huge
body of water is located under the ice block that comprises Antarctica. The lake is able to exist in its
unfrozen state beneath this block of ice because its waters are warmed by geothermal heat from the earth's
core. The thick glacier above Lake Vostok actually insulates it from the frigid temperatures on the surface.
The lake was first discovered in the 1970s while a research team was conducting an aerial survey of the area.
Radio waves from the survey equipment penetrated the ice and revealed a body of water of indeterminate
size. It was not until much more recently that data collected by satellite made scientists aware of the
tremendous size of the lake; the satellite-borne radar detected an extremely flat region where the ice remains
level because it is floating on the water of the lake.
The discovery of such a huge freshwater lake trapped under Antarctica is of interest to the scientific
community because of the potential that the lake contains ancient microbes that have survived for thousands
upon thousands of years, unaffected by factors such as nuclear fallout and elevated ultraviolet light that have
affected organisms in more exposed areas. The downside of the discovery, however, lies in the difficulty of
conducting research on the lake in such a harsh climate and in the problems associated with obtaining
uncontaminated samples from the lake without actually exposing the lake to contamination. Scientists are
looking for possible ways to accomplish this.
1. What is true of Lake Vostok?
A. It is completely frozen. B. It is a saltwater lake.
C. It is beneath a thick slab of ice. D. It is heated by the sun.
2. All of the following are true about the 1970 survey of Antarctica EXCEPT that it…...
A. was conducted by air B. made use of radio waves
C. could not determine the lake's exact size D. was controlled by a satellite
3. The word "microbes" in paragraph 3 could best be replaced by which of the following?
A. Pieces of dust B. Tiny bubbles C. Tiny organisms D. Rays of light
4. Lake Vostok is potentially important to scientists because it
A. can be studied using radio waves B. may contain uncontaminated microbes
C. may have elevated levels of ultraviolet light D. has already been contaminated
5. The last paragraph suggests that scientists should be aware of
A.further discoveries on the surface of Antarctica B.problems with satellite-borne radar equipment
C.ways to study Lake Vostok without contaminating it D.the harsh climate of Antarctica

Like schools in Britain and other English speaking countries, those in the US have also always
stressed “character” or “social” skills” through extracular activities, including organised sports. Because
most schools start at around 8 o’clock every morning and classes often do not finish until 3 or 4 o’clock in
the afternoon, such activities mean that many students do not return home until the early evening. There is
usually a very broad range of extracurricular activities available. Most schools, for instance, publish their
own student newspapers, and some have their own radio stations. Almost all have student orchestras, bands,
and choirs.
Many different sports are also available and most schools share their facilities - swimming pools,
tennis courts, tracks, and stadiums - with the public. Often the students themselves organize and support
school activities and raise money through car washes, baby-sitting, or by mowing lawns. Parents and local
business often also help a group that, for example, has a chance to go to a state music competition, to
compete in some sports championship, or take a camping trip. Such activities not only give pupils a chance
to be together outside of normal classes, they also help develop a feeling of “school spirit” among the
students and in the community.
1. How many hours do the children stay at school a day?
A. eight B. seven C. six D. four
2. Which extracurricular school activities are not mentioned?
A. writing newspapers C. helping old people
B. singing in a choir D. working in a radio station
3. Which sports facilities are not mentioned in the text?
A. swimming pools B. tennis courts C. playground D. stadiums
4. What do the students do to support school activities?

5. Which activities are not helped by parents and local business?
A. performing at a state music competition B. working in a TV station
C. playing in a sport competition D. having a camping trip

Although most universities in the United States are on semester system, which offers classes in the fall
and spring, some schools observe a quarter system comprised of fall, winter, spring and summer quarter. The
academic year, September to June, is divided into three quarters of eleven weeks each, beginning in
September, January, and March; the summer quarter, June to August, is composed of shorter sessions of
varying length.
There are several advantages and disadvantages to the quarter system. On the plus side, students who
wish to complete three degrees in less than the customary four years may take advantage of the opportunity
to study year round by enrolling in all four quarters. In addition, although most students begin their programs
in the fall quarter, they may enter at the beginning of any of the other quarters. Finally, since the physical
facilities are kept in operation year round, the resources are used efficiently to serve the greatest number of
students. But there are several disadvantages as well. Many faculty complain that the eleven-week term is
simply not long enough for them to cover the material required by most college courses. Students also find it
difficult to complete the assignments in such a short period of time.
In order to combine the advantages of the quarter system with those of the semester system, some
colleges and universities have instituted a three-term trimester system. In fourteen weeks, faculty and
students have more time to cover material and finish course requirements, but the additional term provides
more options for admission during the year and accelerates the degree programs for those students who wish
to graduate early.
