Advantages of phytoremeditation
Disadvantages
It can take many growing seasons to clean up a site using this method.
Its use must be restricted to sites with contamination only as deep as the
roots of the plants being used.
Plants that absorb toxic materials may contaminate the food chain.
The air could be also contaminated by the burning of leaves or limbs of plants
containing dangerous chemicals.
Notes 2.2
Nitrogen fixation by rhizobia is of great importance to agriculture:
Legumes such as peas, beans, lentils, soybeans, alfalfa, and clover help feed
the meat-producing animals of the world as well as humans.
Nitrogen-fixing plants grow well in poor soils where there is not enough fixed
nitrogen to support other types of plants.
Nitrogen-fixing plants are used to enrich soils for uptake by later crops by
leaving the roots in the soil after harvest, to decay, releasing organic nitrogen
compounds for the next generation of plants.
Planting a leguminous (or nitrogen-fixing) crop one season, followed by a
non-leguminous one in the same field the next season reducing the need for
commercial fertilizers.
