Problem Statement

You are to create a mathematical model describing multistage compression (assuming 100% compressor efficiency) of
1 mol/s of an ideal gas mixture, at 1atm and 25oC, following which you will implement this model in the Matlab
computer programming language. You may assume constant heat capacities for the gas species. You will submit a short
report via Turnitin detailing your work. You must include all literature sources and references for data you look up. In
this report, you will present the following:

• Problem statement
• Properties of the gas species and gas mixture
• Solution strategy, including assumptions
• Mathematical model
• Matlab or Matlab-compatible code
• Results from executing your Matlab or Matlab-compatible code
o Outlet temperature as a function of compression stage
o Outlet pressure as a function of compression stage
• Discussion of the results, including potential deviations from ideal gas behaviour and practical implementation
of the compression system in real life

The gases in your gas mixture depend on the last digit of your student number:

Last digit of your student number Gas 1 Gas 2

0 Methane Water vapour
1 Hydrogen Oxygen
2 Nitrogen Carbon dioxide
3 Argon Carbon monoxide
4 Methane Water vapour
5 Hydrogen Oxygen
6 Nitrogen Carbon dioxide
7 Argon Carbon monoxide
8 Methane Water vapour
9 Hydrogen Oxygen

2
The compression for every stage in your system will follow the same polytropic process as determined by the second to
last digit of your student number:

Second to last digit of your student number Process

0 Adiabatic and reversible (i.e. isentropic)
1 Isothermal
2 Adiabatic and reversible (i.e. isentropic)
3 Adiabatic and reversible (i.e. isentropic)
4 Isothermal
5 Adiabatic and reversible (i.e. isentropic)
6 Adiabatic and reversible (i.e. isentropic)
7 Isothermal
8 Adiabatic and reversible (i.e. isentropic)
9 Isothermal

The gas composition is related to the third to last digit of your student number as follows:

Mole % Gas 1 = 60 + third to last digit of your student number

The number of stages and compression ratios in your compression system are related to the fourth to last digit of your
student number as follows:

Fourth to last digit of your student number Number of compression stages Compression ratio per stage
0 3 1.5:1
1 3 2:1
2 3 2.5:1
3 3 3:1
4 4 1.5:1
5 4 2:1
6 4 2.5:1
7 4 3:1
8 5 1.5:1
9 5 2:1

3
Your article must comply with the following requirements:

• Font size 11 for all text, except for your title which should be font size 14
• Text justified to both margins
• 1.5 line spacing for all text
• Equations should be justified to the centre
• Front page should contain the title, your name and student number, the module name and course code, date, and
the abstract
• No cover page
• Page numbers on all pages
• Section headings must be in bold font
• Your referencing must follow the American Chemical Society style
• The module name and course code should be in italics
• All tables and figures must be numbered and captioned
• All equations must be numbered
