    Wood absorbs and releases moisture depending on environmental conditions, which causes it to shrink and swell. Wood fibers become saturated at the fiber saturation point, around 30% moisture content, above which further moisture is stored in cell cavities and does not cause swelling. Shrinkage as wood loses moisture from the saturated point can cause warping, checking or cracking in wood members and structures if not properly designed or constructed to allow for movement.
