A Crash Course in Healthcare

((Medical RP can be tough - especially if you don’t know much about the field. The following below are
just guidelines to help assist your RP and give it a dash of spice in case you struggle from time to time!
For any other questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me in world at Catnip Evergarden, or on
Discord at #catnip0001))

● Medical Terminology/Codes 101

○ STAT - immediately
○ Crashing - (i.e: “The patient is crashing!”) The patient is in distress and needs
immediate interventions or else they can code (see below.)
○ Code blue / coding - The patient is unresponsive, has no palpable pulse or visible
chest rise/audible breath sounds via stethoscope – requires cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR)

● Normal vital signs

○ Normal blood pressure range: anything around 120/70 mmHG. The first number,
called systolic blood pressure, is the pressure caused by your heart contracting
and pushing out blood. The second number, called diastolic blood pressure, is
the pressure when your heart relaxes and fills with blood.
■ >140/90 mmHG - patient is hypertensive (high blood pressure) likely due
to pain if there are no other underlying conditions. The higher the
numbers, the likelier they are to have a stroke.
■ <90/50 mmHG - patient is hypotensive (low blood pressure) likely to
happen when the patient is going into shock. Shock is a critical condition
brought on by the sudden drop in blood flow through the body. Shock may
result from trauma, heatstroke, blood loss, an allergic reaction, severe
infection, poisoning, severe burns or other causes.
● Normal pulse rate range: 60 -100 beats per minute (BPM)
○ >100 BPM - Patient is tachycardic. There are several reasons why your heart
rate can beat faster than normal. A few reasons are: pain, stress, anxiety, and
infection.
○ <60 BPM - Patient is bradycardic. A few reasons this can happen are: heart
disease, an electrolyte deficiency, certain infections, autoimmune disorders,
hypothermia, and blood loss related to injury or trauma.
● Normal blood oxygenation levels: 92-100%
○ Your blood oxygen level (blood oxygen saturation) is the amount of oxygen you
have circulating in your blood. Factors that can induce low blood oxygenation
levels include: heart conditions, lung conditions, strong pain medications,
inflammation or scarring of your lung tissue. (i.e damage smoke inhalation after a
fire.)
● Normal temperature range: Normal body temperature typically ranges from 97.5°F to
98.9°F (36.4°C to 37.2°C)
○ < 97.5°F (36.4°C) - Patient is hypothermic. Hypothermia is a condition that
occurs when the body’s temperature drops below 95° F (35° C). Normal body
temperature is 98.6° F (37° C). Hypothermia is a medical emergency.
○ A temperature greater than 100.4°F means that the patient is febrile (they have a
fever.) Fevers are almost always caused by an infection.

● Common medications you might encounter on the field

○ Epinephrine - the primary drug given to those in cardiac arrest. Injection only.
○ Morphine - a highly addicting opioid analgesic. Can be taken by mouth or
injected.
○ Lorazepam - an anti-anxiety medication. Can be taken by mouth or injected.
○ Narcan - Naloxone, or Narcan, is an opioid antagonist that blocks the effects of
opioids, especially in overdoses. Can be given as an injection or as a nasal
spray.
