First Aid and Medical Treatment

Due to the nature of the recreational activities and the varying abilities of the

participants in our programs and events, it is imperative that Able Athletes has a well

developed First Aid and Medical Treatment plan as part of our Occupational Safety and

Health Plan. Accidents are bound to happen through the course of the various activities

that we host. The First Aid and Medical Treatment plan is disseminated to employees

during their new employee onboarding through training modules. The plan also lives on

the Able Athletes website and can be found in the Employee Handbook. Accessible

copies are available by request.

First Aid and Medical Treatment Plan

The purpose of this plan is to ensure the health and safety of our staff and

program participants and to empower staff to provide immediate first aid assistance to

individuals in need. Our staff and program participants can be exposed to a number of

injury risks during our recreational activities and events due to the high energy of the

physical activities and the potential for collisions participating in sports. It is our

responsibility to ensure that our program coordinators are equipped with the adequate

first aid knowledge and equipment to appropriately respond to minor injuries and the

means to contact emergency personnel for serious injuries. A list of the first aid

equipment contents is found at the end of this plan. All kits will be inventoried monthly to

ensure that supplies are stocked and fully functional. It is important to note that all Able

Athletes program staff are certified in CPR, Basic Life Saving skills and First Aid. Able

Athletes staff are not medically trained professionals and therefore are prohibited

from administering medical advice or treatment beyond providing first aid. The
goal of providing first aid is to alleviate suffering, prevent further risks of injury, promote

healing and recovery, and in extreme circumstances preserve life.

Waivers Acknowledging Risk of Injury

Prior to each program and event, all participants (parents or legal guardians for

our minor participants) must complete a waiver acknowledging the risk of injury,

releasing Able Athletes of liability and consenting to first aid treatment for minor injuries.

The Able Athletes representative at the program will also sign this waiver. The waiver

indicates that 911 will be called for serious injuries. While participants may attend

multiple programs, a new waiver for each program needs to be completed. These

documents are program specific which is the need for the waiver to be updated for each

program.

In the event that an injury occurs, the Able Athletes staff must comply with the

following steps to administer prompt first aid to the victim.

Assess the situation and the nature of the injury

● Is the victim’s injury minor or serious? Are the airways obstructed? Is the victim

breathing? Is his/hers/their circulation affected? (ABC assessment). If it is serious

or if there is any impact to the airways, breathing or circulation, call 911

immediately. Follow any guidance provided by the 911 dispatcher.

● If the injury is minor, be sure to remove any additional risks from the perimeter of

the victim to avoid compounding the injury. Once the area is clear of any

additional injury risks, administer appropriate first aid care for minor injuries.
● In the unlikely event of a cardiac emergency, all Able Athletes program staff have

been certified in providing care using an automated external defibrillator (AED)

and will have one on hand with their first aid equipment. If the facility that the

program is being held at has an AED, the staff member may use that one,

especially if it is closer to the victim. The use of the AED must be documented in

the incident documentation.

Notify Emergency Contact

● If the victim is transported, contact the emergency contact listed on the waiver

that was completed prior to the start of the program or event.

● If the victim is not transported, and is 18 years of age or older, offer to call the

emergency contact that was provided on the waiver. If the victim is a minor, call

their emergency contact once first aid has been administered.

Following the Incident

● Complete the Incident Documentation or I-Doc. This report will include the date

of the incident, the location, the name of the victim, and any witnesses and their

report of what happened. If the victim was transported, this will also include the

name of the facility where they were transported. It may be necessary to include

if there is any surveillance footage available. These reports are electronic, will be

completed on a tablet on site and stored in Able Athletes internal incident

reporting system. Incident documents are stored for seven years, longer if

necessary.

Follow Up
In the days following the incident, Human Resources will follow up with the staff

member involved, whether they were the victim or were the Able Athletes representative

responding to the injury. This follow up will ensure the well-being of the Able Athletes

staff member. If the staff member was injured, we want to promote recovery and healing

and also provide the necessary support. If the staff member responded to an injury, it is

important that resources are offered to ensure the mental health well-being of the

employee.

Leadership will follow up with the victim, if it wasn’t an employee. The purpose of

this is to keep lines of communication open. We value all of our participants and should

they become injured during one of our programs, we hope for a quick recovery. While

we will not provide medical advice we do have a number of resources that we can

recommend that may promote their recovery, physically and mentally.

If you have any additional questions or need assistance with remaining compliant

with the First Aid and Medical Treatment plan, please reach out to Human Resources or

your immediate supervisor. For the safety of our employees and program participants, it

is important that we all are compliant with the First Aid and Medical Treatment plan as

part of our overall Occupational Safety and Health Plan.
