MSU Extension to host Respite
Retreat for Caregivers May 6th
MSU Extension will be hosting a respite retreat for
caregivers at the Cottonwood Inn in Glasgow, MT May 6th
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This retreat aims to provide caregivers
a chance to take a break from their caregiving responsibilities
and spend a day prioritizing their well-being. Caregiving can
be very demanding, both physically and mentally, and this
retreat is an effort to allow those individuals to take a day and
focus on self-care.
Caregivers can take on many responsibilities and come
in many different forms. As defined by the Center for Disease
Control and Prevention, a caregiver is a person who provides
consistent care or assistance to any friend or family member
who has health issues or a disability. In Montana, one in six
adults are caregivers, and nearly fifty percent of caregivers
have provided care for at least two years.
Caregivers may assist with many needs of the individual
they are caring for, including finances, household tasks,
shopping, bathing, managing medications, and more. These
individuals may be providing in-person care, but they can also
be assisting their friend or family member from a distance.
Almost one-third of Montana caregivers provide care for at
least twenty hours a week. This amount of responsibility can
cause many challenges for caregivers and even lead to health
issues from stress such as depression and anxiety.
The upcoming respite retreat is an opportunity for
caregivers in Northeast Montana to gather with those with
similar experiences and take some time for themselves. There
will be four primary areas of focus at the retreat – health and
wellness, nutrition, relaxation, and social support. Each of
these areas will have an activity that the participants will
engage in during the retreat.
One example of an activity caregiver will participate in
is making tasty, healthy mocktails while talking about the
importance of nutrition. One of the goals of the nutrition
module is to have participants de-stress while enjoying a
mocktail of choice and discussing the health benefits of
some of the ingredients. Participants will leave with a list of
mocktails they can try at home and information on making a
nutritious snack a fun and relaxing part of their day.
In addition to the retreat being free to all participants,
MSU Extension and the other two sponsors, Montana
Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS)
and Montana Lifespan Respite, realize that it may be difficult
for caregivers to take a whole day for themselves for many
reasons, including financial barriers. To alleviate some of that
stress, we will give a $100 Visa gift card to all participants to
assist in finding someone to care for their loved ones during
the retreat. Lunch will also be provided.

FMDH Foundation
Scholarships Available
The FMDH Foundation is once again offering
scholarships to qualifying students! The Foundation is
continually grateful to our donors who are always thinking
of others, knowing they might need a helping hand. With
nine named scholarships and $30,000 available to give, we
encourage students to apply if they meet the requirements.
The Scholarship Committee is excited to review the
applications of our future nurses, doctors or students in
other medically related fields!
The Frank Heckner Memorial Scholarship is funded
by a charitable trust gifted by Frank Heckner in October
1989.
• Applicant must be enrolled in a medically related program
• Applicant must be at least a second-year student
• Applicant must carry a GPA of 2.0 or better
The Theo & Alyce Beck Memorial Scholarship was
established in December 1996.
• Applicant must be a graduate of a Valley County High
School
• Applicant must be enrolled in a medically related program
• Applicant must be at least a second-year student
• Applicant must carry a GPA of 2.0 or better
The Anna Berge Memorial Scholarship was
established in December 2008. Anna had been a teacher for

The Helen Tihista Marks Memorial Scholarship was
established in June 2011 by her children. Helen started as a
nurse’s aide when she was 15, and her passion for the field
only grew from there.
• Applicant must be a graduate of a Valley County or Phillips
County High School and the “neighborhood watchman”. He continues watching
• Applicant must be enrolled in a nursing program
• Applicant must be at least a second-year student
• Applicant must carry a GPA of 2.0 or better
The Vera Terry Nursing Scholarship was established
in January 2014 by her daughter. Vera worked several years
in the nursing field; including many years spent at FMDH. It
was her passion, and this scholarship is to encourage others
to follow theirs.
• Applicant must be a graduate of a Northeast Montana
High School
• Applicant must be enrolled in a nursing program
• Applicant must be at least a second-year student
• Applicant must carry a GPA of 2.0 or better
The Donald J. Baker Scholarship was established in
May 2017 by the Foundation Scholarship Committee. With
the generous unrestricted bequest he gifted, the committee
wanted to honor him with this named scholarship.
• Applicant must be a Valley County High School graduate
• Applicant must be enrolled in a medically related program
• Applicant must be at least a second-year student
• Applicant must carry a GPA of 3.0 or better
The Sever & Esther Enkerud Nursing Scholarship was
established in October 2018 by Sever Enkerud. He wanted
to honor his wife Esther, who had a dream to be a nurse
when she was a young girl and pursued it passionately. Esther
passed away in 2015 and Sever is happy to help local students
pursue their nursing dreams.
• Applicant must be a Valley County High School graduate
• Applicant must be enrolled in a nursing program
• Applicant must be at least a second-year student
• Applicant must carry a GPA of 2.0 or better
The Deborah Guenther Nursing Scholarship was
established in December 2018 by Keith and Deborah
Guenther. Deborah has been a Perioperative nurse since
1986, and upon retirement, wanted to give back. Keith and
Deborah believe in the importance of a nursing education,
including certification, and how it relates to the quality of
care. This scholarship supports the nursing education and
standards of care practiced when obtaining a degree or
continuing to gain certification.
• Applicant must be a graduate of a Montana High School of
an FMDH employee
• Preference may be given to nurses working toward
certification such as CNOR
• Applicant must be at least a second-year student, if not an
RN already, and applying to a related program to further
their education.
• Applicant must carry a GPA of 3.0 or better
The Richard Winderl Scholarship was established in
July 2020. Richard was a lifelong Valley County resident
over the community he loved so much with his gift to the
scholarship fund, helping to encourage our rural students
down a medical path of success.
• Applicant must be a Valley County Graduate
• Applicant must be enrolled in a medically related program
• Applicant must be at least a second-year student
• Applicant must carry a 3.0 or better
To apply, the following documentation must accompany
each scholarship application:
• Most recent official college transcripts (No web printouts
will be accepted).
• Two current and original letters of recommendation (No
recommendation will be accepted without a date or if
photocopied). If you’ve previously applied, you will need
new recommenders each year.
• An Essay - Minimum one page single spaced: “Why I am
pursuing a career in healthcare and how this scholarship
would assist me in obtaining my goals.” (If you applied
previously, must have an updated essay.)
• Name and address of school where the check would
be sent if awarded (No checks will be issued directly to
students).

Glasgow track still finding way

The weather hasn't been cooperating for spring
sports (although the precipitation is much appreciated!).
A Lot of the track, golf and softball events were canceled
last week. This means that the Glasgow Scotties track
and field team lost the Wibaux Invite to the weather.
Now the Sidney Invitational has been canceled so that
means the Scotties have lost out on two meets already
this year.
The next meet is the Cal Wearley Invitational in
Havre. The Scotties will see how they stack up against
the other Northern B programs.
Glasgow coach Tim Phillips said he hasn't had a
full boys squad yet.
"It's tough. We had some gone and had other things
going on. So we haven't put a full team together," he
said. "We won the Baker meet, which isn't a huge meet.
But it shows we have some talent. Some really young
talent. We have some first-year seniors and freshmen
and sophomores coming in. We'll do well this year, but
if that young group sticks together then in a couple
years we'll be good."
The Scotties have a good pole vault crew with
Stephen Bailey and Ted Tyran both doing well. Both of
the seniors have placed. Bailey has won twice thus far
and Tyran has finished second and sixth.
"Ted has been doing really well and he has been
helping us out on the track and the jumps," said Phillips.
Glasgow has good sprinters and distance runners in
Reed Larsen, Dalton Sand, Bergen Miller, and Kyler
Holinde.
"We're not as quick as I want to be.We've had some
injuries that happened before the season and some
long standing injuries," Phillips said. "We're just trying
to be patient. Blake Lloyd issues that came up before
the season. Wyatt Babb hurt himself the day the season
started. The sprinters haven't had a chance to show what
they can do yet.'
`Blaire Westby is running on a foot that has been giving
her problems. Tyann Graham is also nursing an injury
and hasn't been able to pole vault yet.
"That actually happened at the Sidney meet for
Blaire," said Phillips. "The doctors haven't got an answer
yet. Give her credit, she played volleyball and basketball
with it. It's hard to train and compete in this northeast
Montana weather with her foot the way it is."
Westby will be seeing a specialist in a couple of
weeks. Hopefully the senior will get some answers
about her injury. She has run the 100 and 200 meters
and placed in both.
The girls have good distance runners as well. The
Scotties are led by senior Iris McKean. She has some
younger teammates in Tanae Baker and Emily See.
"We have three All-Staters from cross country. Iris
and Emily were All-State for us last year in track," said
Phillips. "Emily hurt her foot in a running camp last
summer so she missed cross country, she would have
been an All-Stater then. We're still trying to get her
stride back. Andrew (McKean) is easing her back into
it. Tanae placed in the top10 in cross country. She won
the 800 in Baker. She sat on the number one runner
until the final 200 meters and went around her. So we
know she has more in her tank. That's a big 1-2-3 punch
in the distances for the girls."
The weight events, shot put and discus, the Scotties
aren't as strong yet.
"We're pretty young yet. We have some first-year
seniors that are coming out and doing it," said Phillips.
"That's a man sport. So they are taking their lumps.
Bergen Miller has been throwing for years, so I think
he's going to have a great season. Vaughn Miller is
throwing the javelin well."
Sand does just about everything the coaches want
him to.
"He's a trooper," said Phillis. "He just missed
placing in the top six in the 800 last year."
Phillips noted that he would like to get a meet in as
there isn't too much of the regular season left. After the
Havre meet the Scotties will send a good core to Great
Falls for the Belt-Fairfield Invite and put some of the
younger kids into the Saco-Whitewater Invite.
