Hinsdale and Valley County can be
proud. Kaitlyn McColly, selected to represent
the United States at the FISU World University
Games in Chengdu, China, did a fantastic job
competing in the heptathlon following an NAIA
national championship in that event this past May.
She was competing against some top athletes from
around the globe! Her results from over the three days
of competition: 100m Hurdles 14.36 (ties p.r., 17th); High
Jump 1.59m (19th); Shot Put 10.47m (21st); 200m 26.45
(22nd); Long Jump 5.29 meters (17.35 feet) (20th); Javelin
34.66 meters (113.7 feet, (she scratched on a throw of about 40M, which
would be over a little over 130 feet for us dummies who don’t know much
about meters) (18th); and 800m 2:23.73, P.R. by a second (13th). Kaitlyn
took 17th place overall, and what a world class experience!

Montana Gets Ready For The Blue Angels In Billings

For a long time I only knew him as “Thumper.” The
guy in the light blue sweater in the above photo. That’s
“Thumper.” He lives in Bozeman, Montana and he’s
actually a retired brigadier general, but everybody still
calls him “Thumper”- his call sign from when he flew
with the Blue Angels.
Thumper teamed up with Jake Penwell and
Matthew McDonnell, and now a lifelong dream is about
to turn into reality later this week for those two Billings
men.
Jake Penwell and Matthew McDonnell, two
longtime friends from Billings, co-chair the planning
committee for the Yellowstone International Air Show.
Jake was moved by seeing the Blue Angels as a kid in
1988, and was inspired to join the Navy. Since then, he’s
wanted to bring an airshow to Billings that would do
the same for the younger generation today. (As Rachel
Helgeson wrote back in December of 2021 when the big
news was announced that the Blue Angels put Billings,
Montana on their show list)
7 months ago we captured the moment as the first
US Navy Blue Angels jet landed in Billings to go over air
show plans. The turnout from the public was huge- even
just for one aircraft.

Whose Money is It?

Is your wealth really yours?
If it was all yours, you could keep it, spend it, give
it away, or pass it on when you die. And, if it was yours,
it would be nobody’s business what you legally did with
it. To keep it safe, you probably wouldn’t go waving it
around and tell people where you keep it. That’s if it was
yours.
But, because of income taxes, sales taxes, gift taxes,
property taxes and inheritance taxes, you can’t keep all
of it, spend all of it, give all of it away or pass all of it
on. And, it’s getting harder to keep it private too. So,
it’s not really yours. You just temporarily have control
of some of it, and a lot of people have their eyes on it
and want some of it now and more of it later. Who are
these people and how do they justify taking what isn’t
theirs? Let’s ignore the robbers who from the beginning
of time took a few things illegally and, instead, focus
on examples of how people justify forcibly taking large
chuncks of your wealth legally. Or, to put it simply, how
do people justify taxes?
In olden times, the King just took it because he
could and his will was the law. It was simple and honest
“might makes right”. There was no need or attempt
to justify it. Now, in countries where people remain
in power through elections and governments tend to
grow and want more and more, rulers feel the need to
make excuses for taki ng more and more wealth from
individuals through taxation. Basically, politicians are
not much different than Kings, they tax because they can
get away with it. However, their excuses are fascinating
and worthy of examination because understanding them
could limit tax abuses by electing less corrupt politicians.

One of the most popular excuses for taxing an
individual’s wealth is that he or she doesn’t deserve
to have it. It’s human nature to look at someone who
has more than you do and wonder why. The 10th
Commandment says “Thou shall not covet …” It
is a desire we all have to control. In order to justify
taking what they covet, politicians lacking that Biblical
control have to challenge your right to own it. One
of the cleverest arguments is the “you didn’t build
that” argument used by Senator Elizabeth Warren and
President Barack Obama. Here is Lizzy’s argument in
her own words:
“There is nobody in this country who got rich on their
own. Nobody. You built a factory out there - good for you.
But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on
roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of
us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because
of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for.
You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would
come and seize everything at your factory... Now look. You
built a factory and it turned into something terrific or a
great idea - God bless! Keep a hunk of it. But part of the
underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and
pay forward for the next kid who comes along.”
In summary, her argument is the government gets
to spend the wealth you created because you used their
roads and took advantage of education, police and fire
services paid for by others.
Let’s admit that governments do provide
protections that allow us to produce and that these
protections need to be paid for because governments
produce nothing and can’t pay for it themselves. But,
her argument doesn’t support her theme of “you didn’t
built that” or that you don’t deserve to keep what you
have made. She has been an academic and a politician
all her life and has never run a business. She has no
idea what it takes to build a successful business. Nor
does she have knowledge that your product caused
any more wear and tear on the roads than that of an
average citizen. Parents pay to educate their children
for several reasons including to be able to get a job and
earn a living. And if their children work for you, you are
indeed already paying “the next kid that comes along.”
Finally, your business didn’t cause the city any greater
expense for police and fire protection. Many businesses
hire their own security if they need extra protection.
It’s all an excuse to take your wealth and spend it on
what gets her votes and only marginally, if at all, on
roads, education, police and fire. It’s an excuse not a
justification. If she really believed her own argument,
she would be making sure your tax dollars go to the
police or the first responders, but she doesn’t even stand
up to the “Defund the Police” movement.
Unlike Lizzy, many don’t even go through the
trouble of concocting an argument for taking your
money. Instead, they suspect your wealth is undeserved
and assume “all wealth is theft” or you’re just lucky. In
Honoré de Balzac’s 1896 The Human Comedy, he voices
the theft suspicion clearly: “The secret of a great success
for which you are at a loss to account is a crime that has
never been found out, because it was properly executed.”
He and others assume that unexplained wealth is ill
gotten and that guilt is assumed and innocence must be
proved. The “just lucky” suspicion was expressed years
ago by Congressman Barny Frank (former Chairman
of the House Financial Services Committee) in his
justification for confiscating inherited wealth: “Heirs,
who now inherit, they haven’t done this on their own,
they haven’t worked hard; that’s a pure gift to someone
who is lucky enough to be related to someone or very
friendly with someone, who’s [inaudible, perhaps
lending] them the money.” Frank is robbing the dead
not the heirs. Someone spent their life earning that
wealth and deciding who should be the beneficiary.
Why should Barny get to spend it because he decides
all beneficiaries are unworthy? The only reason for
assuming wealth is ill gotten or that beneficiaries are
unworthy is because you want an excuse for taking it.
Redistribution is another motive for politicians
to eye your wealth. Unlike Lizzy who says she wants
your stuff to help the “next kid that comes along”, the
redistributionist want your stuff because they don’t want
you to have it. They want to cut you down to size. To
equalize wealth. This desire to “tax the rich” is fed by all
sorts of motives from jealousy of lifestyle and political
power to a desire for equality regardless if it means equal
in poverty. Redistributionist want to take from the rich
because they like taking from the rich. When AOC wore
that dress with “Tax the Rich” in bold letter across her
backside, she was flaunting her power, and her smile
revealed how much she would enjoy the taking.
Not every redistributionist is as obvious as
AOC about the pleasure they take in taking your
wealth. Watch how Senator Barack Obama explains
redistribution in the famous “Joe the plumber” incident
while he was campaigning in October 2008. You will
recall that Joe Wurzelbacher had just explained to
presidential candidate Obama that he owed his wealth
to working hard (10-12 hours a day) as a self-employed
plumber and he asked if his success would be greeted
by a penalty of higher taxes. Obama replied: “It’s not
that I want to punish your success. I just want to make
sure that everybody who is behind you, that they’ve
got a chance for success too. My attitude is that if the
economy’s good for folks from the bottom up, it’s gonna
be good for everybody … I think when you spread the
wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”
How slick is that! Not only does he avoid directly
answering Joe’s question about raising his taxes, he
tries to imply that he doesn’t want to punish success
but sorta has to so that others can succeed because
spreading the wealth is good for everyone. How is
taking from Joe good for Joe? Is it going to make Joe
work harder? Are others going to work harder because
Joe is punished for working hard? When somebody
gives you reasons for taxing that don’t make sense, it’s
an excuse to do something for reasons they know you
probably wouldn’t approve. Obama doesn’t believe a
word of his explanation to Joe. He hates the business
world. In his autobiography, he describes his brief and
only experience as an employee: “Like a spy behind
enemy lines, I arrived every day at my mid-Manhattan
office…” (quote from Dreams from My Father page
135). Helping any business succeed is the furthest thing
from Obama’s mind.
Another redistribution strategy is the wealth
tax proposed by the lady who only wanted your stuff
because “you didn’t build that”, our old friend Lizzy.
This time, there is no helping “the next kid who comes
along”. Fortunately for us, she only wants to tax the
super rich, now. Her bill (Senate Bill S 510 introduced
March 1, 2021) would take 2% of all assets exceeding
$50 million. It’s a brand new “camel’s nose under the
tent” attack on private property itself. The precedent is
frightening. Just by changing a few words in this law,
virtually anything can get taxed, the limit on taxable
wealth lowered, and the percentage of wealth taken
increased. What’s her justification? Here’s her answer:
“The money is going to come from the billionaires who
don’t pay their taxes and therefore have enough money
to shoot themselves into space.” Or, basically you got
more than you need and are wasting it. So, we’re taking
it.
How brazen and dishonest! The money doesn’t
come from billionaires who don’t pay their taxes. It
comes from any low-level millionaire with $50 million
who may or may not pay his taxes. Next year it could
be anyone with a house. And it doesn’t cost a billion to
shoot yourself into space. Virgin Galactic says it will

However, the main injustice of the wealth tax is that Students heading to college
wealth doesn’t imply ability to pay. Say you own a farm
valued at $50 million because of its land value. That
doesn’t mean your crops will fund $1 million in wealth
every year to pay taxes. You’ll have to sell or lose your

law would be a nightmare and corrupting. Who gets to
set the value of your stuff? Who is going to inventory
your stuff each year? Who isn’t going to try to hide
their wealth or take all their valuables and store them
in a foreign country? Talk about violations of the 4th
Amendment and invasion of privacy and “unreasonable
searches and seizures.”
So, the politicians are coming for everything.
Where can you hide your wealth? Forget land. That’s
already taxed to the max by the state and federal
governments. Stocks and bonds too, the companies
already report everything to the feds and politicians
have even proposed taxing unrealized gains (imaginary
profits that you could get if you sold now). How about
cash? Well inflation caused by the feds printing billions
of new dollars each year is devaluing your cash by

about 6% each year. And they don’t want you to hide
how much cash you have by putting it in a safe place
like a bank. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen defended
a Biden administration proposal that would require ELECTRIC
banks to report data to the Internal Revenue Service
on transactions over $600, calling the collection of
information “routine”. It’s actually a little worse. The
