Letter to the Buzz
As Helen Keller said once upon a time
2023 brought a lot of change, growth, and transition
for the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce. As we start the
new year, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude
to our members, volunteers, event sponsors, board of
directors, and staff. The Glasgow Chamber appreciates
your unwavering support.
As a small non-profit organization, the Glasgow
Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture depends
on community volunteers to carry out events, programs,
and activities to enrich our community and fulfill our
mission. We greatly appreciate each and every one of you
who has volunteered in our community at any capacity.
All our volunteers, including those who serve on our
board of directors, have performed an instrumental role
in improving our community. We literally could not do it
without you!
Over the past year I have witnessed dozens of
community members set aside their own agenda to
selflessly assist with activities that enhance the greater
good of the Glasgow area. However, I often see the same
individuals stretching themselves thin volunteering for
several organizations at many community events. Many
of those who constantly and continuously volunteer to
make our community a better place are ready to pass the
torch on to the next group of community minded folks.
Let us urge our younger community members to become
more involved in local endeavors, for our previous efforts
are not in vain.
Unfortunately, the COVID-19 Pandemic negatively
impacted the number of volunteers who participate in
several key Glasgow Chamber planning committees, and
we are still feeling the repercussions of that decline. We
currently need individuals who are willing to step up and
volunteer for our many events, activities, and community
efforts. Due to this deterioration of volunteers, we
have had to regrettably scale back some of sour events,
projects, and programs. Unless we have more individuals,
businesses, and organizations willing to participate in our
existing undertakings, that decline will continue. We do
not want that to happen!
In 2024 I encourage our community members to
become more involved and engaged in local endeavors.
There are so many opportunities in our area for growth
and improvement, but we need the help of our community
members to accomplish those feats.

Yoakam hits long range

When the three-point shot was added to high school
basketball we saw players starting to bury shots from
beyond the arc.
Glasgow junior Myles Yoakam had that touch Friday
night, hitting seven buckets from long range.
Yoakam buried two bombs to start the first quarter.
He added two more in the second, two in the third and
polished it off with one in the fourth. Yoakam was 7 for 17
from behind the arc.
The Scotties (5-8, 3-2) needed Yoakam’s 21 points to
defeat the fast-moving Harlem squad, 64-54.
“He’s going to get those looks, especially with Cade
(Hudyma) getting the attention. He’s been forty percent
from the three point line the last three of four games,” said
Glasgow Coach Paul Yoakam. “We’re going to need him
down the stretch of the season to take the pressure off of
Cade.”
After Myles Yoakam buried the two threes, Wyatt
Babb scored for an 8-0 lead. Babb, who also had a good
game, scored nine more points in the first quarter. The
Scotties led by 11 late in the frame and held a 19-10 edge
going into the second stanza.
Harlem (5-5, 1-4) fought back from an 11-point
deficit to get within 30-28 late in the second frame. Lance
Morgan and Matt Billmayer each had a buck and Cody
McCabe drained a three-pointer in the Wildcats 7-0 run
after trailing 30-21. The Scotties led 32-28 at the break.
The Scotties opened up a 40-33 lead on Yoakam’s
three, but the Wildcats fought back to make it a 49-46
contest going into the fourth period.
McCabe drained his second trey to start the fourth.
He followed that with a free throw, giving Harlem its first
and only lead of the game, 50-49.
Glasgow would go on a 10-0 run with Hudyma five
points, Yoakam knocking down a three, and Babb hitting
a bucket. McCabe cut the deficit to 59-52 with 1:45 to play.
But the Scotties remained focused to regain a nine point
lead and win by 10 points.
Babb led the way for the Scotties, scoring 22 points on
9 of 26 field goals and pulling down 12 rebounds.
“He’s been focusing on his shot selection. He’s been
really efficient at times,” said Yoakam.
Also scoring in double figures and finish with a
double-double was Cade Hudyma. The freshman scored
13 points and hit the boards for 13 rebounds.
Rounding out the scoring were Nick Solorzano
with four points, Toryn Richards two points and seven
rebounds, and Conner Hudyma two points and eight
rebounds. Glasgow was 24 for 63 from the field.
McCabe finished with 22 points for Harlem. Billmayer
added 13, Morgan eight, Moses Lawrence five, Tommy
Champagne and Frank Snell three each.
Glasgow welcomed Fairview (6-4, 2-1) into the
District 2B, defeating the Warriors 51-36 Thursday night.
“Fairview is a good team. We match up with them
fairly well,” said Yoakam. “We were coming off of a three-
game losing streak after losing three close games in a row.
We just put it together defensively. We were able to get a
good lead in the first quarter. We took care of the ball.”
After taking a 12-10 first quarter lead, the Scotties
pulled away from Fairview late in the second for a 28-18
lead at the half. The Scotties were playing clean ball as they
were whistled for only three fouls in the first half.
Yoakam drilled two more bombs in the third, giving
the Scotties a 38-20 advantage with 4:15 to play. With those
six points it added up for a 14-2 run and a 42-22 lead. It
was the Glasgow defense that proved to be too much for
the Warriors. The Scotties led 49-30 at the 2:35 mark in the
fourth when Solorzano made two charity buckets.
Yoakam led the Scotties with 14 points, going 4 of 9
from beyond the arc and had six rebounds. Cade Hudyma
followed with 12 points and six boards, Solorzano had
11 points, Babb 10 and seven boards, and Richards four
points. The Scotties went 19 for 54 from the field.
“Winning makes a lot of things go away and makes
things easy moving forward,” said Yoakam. “We have a
busy two weeks. A lot of things we’re working on will be
applied.”
The busy two weeks started Tuesday night when the
Scotties went to Sidney. The Eagles managed to pull out a
51-48 win in the closing seconds of the game.
The Scotties and Eagles battled in the fourth quarter
that saw the lead change hands six times.
Cade Hudyma had eight points in the first quarter as
the Scotties took an 18-12 lead. Glasgow led 24-22 at the
break, but the Eagles flew back to gain a 39-36 advantage
in the third.
Glasgow held leads of 40-39, 43-42 and 48-46 in the
final period. The game was tied at 46 on Solorzano’s three.
Sidney (6-6) took the final lead, 49-48, on Kevin
Hutzenbiler’s three-pointer.
Babb scored 16 points for the Scotties, Cade Hudyma
followed with 12, Richards had eight, Solorzano six,
Connor Hudyma four, and Yoakam two.
The Scotties host Rocky Boy Friday and travel to Wolf
Point Saturday. Tuesday it will be Senior-Night against
Malta.

Evan Wilson is the Vice President of Moore
Information Group, a prominent national polling firm.
He’s also a Billings, Montana native and the son of the
late MSU-Billings pollster and political scientist Dr.
Craig Wilson.
He pointed out several flaws with the survey
and how it is being used to try and manipulate public
opinion. One great point he made: Montanans may
tolerate something, but that doesn’t mean we support it.
For example, we just tolerated 40 below zero weather-
that doesn’t mean we like it.
Evan Wilson: We are in the field doing public
opinion surveys on a nightly basis. A lot of the work we
do is for candidates running for statewide office. We poll
on the gray wolf all the time. And I can tell you that the
data that we see at Moore Information Group among
registered voters in Montana who actually show up and
vote is not what the University of Montana is trying to
peddle to folks today.
Wilson highlighted the impact that an
overpopulation of wolves is having on elk hunting
populations in Montana.
Evan Wilson: We have 30 years of research now to
show that it’s 20,000 elk per year that these wolves are
killing. We got 1,000 wolves in Montana, we don’t need
more. And surveys like this just feed the misinformation
that somehow after 30 years the poor residents of
Montana are just going to get used to the gray wolf and
nothing could be further from the truth.
