Stepping On continued from front

Registration for the upcoming January 2024 course
has begun! This class will meet every week for two hours
beginning January 8 and finish February 19. Some of
the techniques that one could learn are choosing safe
footwear for all activities, seeing and avoiding fall
hazards out in the community, using walking aids the
right way and more!

AG Knudsen Files Lawsuit Against Instagram Parent Company Meta
Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen
announced today the State is suing Meta, the parent
company of Facebook and Instagram, in federal court
alleging that the company’s misrepresentations of content
available on Instagram violate Montana’s consumer
protection laws and that its data collection practices violate
the federal law. The lawsuit also alleges that Instagram
was intentionally designed to be addictive, particularly to
minors, and that this addiction harms Montana minors
by substantially affecting their mental health. The lawsuit
follows an investigation that Attorney General Knudsen
launched in 2021.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the
District of Montana, seeks a preliminary and a permanent
injunction to compel Instagram to cease its deceptive
and unfair statements about the frequency and severity
of drug and alcohol content, sexual content, nudity,
mature/suggestive themes, and profanity on the Instagram
platform; its inaccurate age-ratings in the App Store
and other online marketplaces, and its deceptive public
assurances in the Instagram Community Guidelines
and elsewhere. Because these misrepresentations violate
Montana’s Consumer Protection Act, the State may
receive civil penalties of up to $10,000 for each violation.
The lawsuit also seeks a permanent injunction to compel
compliance with COPPA’s parental consent provisions.
“Meta must be held accountable for its deceptive
practices and the harm it has caused. Instagram’s intentional
addictive design and its failure to address the rampant
presence of harmful content on its platform, including
explicit drug promotion and sexual exploitation, pose
serious risks to the mental health and well-being of young
Montanans,” Attorney General Knudsen said. “Internal
documents leaked to the public show that Meta was aware
of the harms it inflicted on minors, but instead of taking
corrective action, the company continued to tell the parents
it was a safe product for their kids to use. I am committed to
safeguarding the rights and protection of Montanans: social
media companies must comply with our state laws and
prioritize the safety and privacy of our citizens.”
Instagram was intentionally designed to be addicting,
especially for minors who are referred to in internal company
documents as a “valuable, but untapped” user base. Despite
Instagram’s addictive nature and design, Meta has conveyed
misleadingly that it is safe for users under 17, evidenced by a
“12+” rating in the App Store and a “T” for “Teen” rating in
other stores. The company’s failure to disclose the addictive
nature of Instagram, particularly to minors, constitutes
deceptive acts that adversely impact the mental health and
overall well-being of Montana minors. The intentional
design for addictiveness, as alleged, underscores Meta’s
knowing engagement in these harmful actions.
Meta tells consumers that Instagram contains only
“infrequent” or “mild” content related to things like drug
use, sexual content or nudity, and other mature themes
and claims ratings in online marketplaces like the App
Store that it is suitable for users aged 12 and older. These
representations, however, are patently false as the company
allows “sexual content and nudity, alcohol, tobacco, and
drug use and references, and mature/suggestive themes
on the Instagram platform, including readily accessible
hardcore pornography.” The platform has also been found
to promote or allow child pornography, sexual extortion of
teenagers, and open dealing of opioids and other drugs.
Despite advertising itself as only having
“infrequent/mild” sexual content and nudity:
• A Digital Citizens Alliance investigative report revealed
drugs being advertised on Instagram and evidenced
the ease with which a user can purchase drugs via its
direct messaging platform. As researchers followed
more drug dealers, Instagram’s algorithms amplified
the problem – push more drug sellers toward the
researcher’s account;
• Other investigative reporters found that minor users
were able to easily search for age-restricted and illegal
drugs, and Instagram’s algorithm pushed accounts of
drug dealers selling opioids and other drugs;
• Instagram violates its Community Guidelines by failing
to remove offending content when it is made aware of
violating drug content; and
• The State’s investigation also revealed that extreme
drug content is rampant, and that drug content is easy
to find and to access.
Despite advertising itself as only having
“infrequent/mild” sexual content and nudity:
• The State’s own research using a text account
revealed that nudity, sexual content, and pornography
is widespread and easily accessed on Instagram;
• Instagram imposes no meaningful barriers to prevent
children from being exposed to or searching for
pornography; and
• Underage sex content is prevalent and easily accessible,
and even actively promoted by the platform’s algorithm.
Researchers have concluded that “The problem [with
child sex abuse material] on Instagram is particularly
severe” compared to other social platforms.
Despite telling consumers in the App Store that
“mature/suggestive themes” are “infrequent/mild:”

Lions roar in Glasgow

If you thought the Lustre Christian Lions were
good last year, you should see them this year. Fans
around Valley County got a sneak preview of the Lions
last weekend when they were in Glasgow for the 11th
Annual Class C Showcase held at Glasgow High School.
Six-foot-5 sophomore Johnslee Pierre showed the
fans that Lustre Christian means business again this
year. Pierre showed why he is a threat inside and outside
the key. He had two steals that he capped off with a slam
dunk. Pierre finished the weekend with five slams.
The Lions are a team that has many weapons that
can shoot the ball. They’ll get an early test this weekend
when they participate in the Scobey Tournament. The
Lions will play Broadus Friday, then Froid-Lake the
following day. Lustre Christian defeated the Redhawks
last year in the semifinals of the Eastern C Divisional.
Mason Dethman, a 6-foot-5 senior, leads the Redhawks.
The Lions chewed up Mon-Dak Friday evening, 78-
18, jumping out to a 9-0 lead. The Lions defense held
the Thunder scoreless until the 4:36 mark of the first
quarter. They led 21-7 after the first quarter and 50-9 at
the break.
Pierre had half of his game-high 20 points in the
first half. Diek Olfert added 11 points, Cayden Klatt had
10, Terran Joseph nine, Ife Aniobi eight, Prestyn Klatt
and Nathan Fast six each, Cam Reddig three, Eyosias
Ayalew and Clay Reddig two each, and Brian Guedes
one.
Elliot Rudninger had 11 points for the Thunder,
Thomas Arnson chipped in three, Landyn Brunelle and
Cade Else two each.
Saturday afternoon the Lions notched their second
win with a 68-25 victory over Terry. The Lions took an
18-6 first quarter lead and led 40-13 at the break.
Lions coach Randy Reddig rotated in and out his
entire bench. Pierre tallied 24 points in leading the
Lions. Joseph added 10 points, Caydn Klatt had seven,
Olfert five,
Nashua split its two games at the Showcase. The
Porcupines showed its strength on both ends of the
court both days. Turner won on Friday over Nashua,
61-50.
Treat Billmeyer led the Tornadoes switch 17 points.
Ryan Doyle followed with 16 points, Carson Maloney
had 11, Caleb Zellmer eight, Tate Beck six, and Ty Beck
three.
Grady Nielsen went 6 for 10 from the line and
buried a three-pointer to lead Nashua with a game-
high 24 points. Damon Adkins rained four treys for
12 points, Noah Leckie had nine on 5 of 8 free throws,
Bubba Pugh and Caden Laumeyer four each.
Nashua came back Saturday to whip Plevna 57-34.
The Porcupines held a 29-10 lead at the break behind
Nielsen’s 15 points. The sophomore had a career-high
28 points. Laumeyer followed with 11 points, Pugh had
nine, Leckie six, and Adkins three.
Kaeden Oberlander scored 13 points for the
Cougars, Tristen Buerkle and Jordan Paul had seven
Friday, Dodson nipped Terry 47-45 and Plevna beat
Bainville 59-37. Saturday Dodson whipped Mon-Dak
49-23 and Bainville defeated Turner 53-46.
In Billings at Lockwood High School the Frazer
Bearcubs lost to Reed Point-Rapelje 56-34 and to
Bridger 67-26.
Circle won two, defeating Ekalaka 53-36 and
Plentywood 62-59.
Scobey-Opheim and North Country were in Miles
City for a tournament. The Spartans beat Harlowton-
Ryegate-Judith Gap 55-35 and Jordan 71-27.
The Mavericks lost to Jordan 54-35 Friday with
Blaine Downing netting 13 points, Coy Bowman and
Leyton Erickson had eight each, and Kade Strommen
six.
Jaydeen Saylor led the Mustangs with 23 points,
Jason Murnion added 12, Porter Kreider eight, Koby
Saylor six, Brody Twitchell three, and AJ Munion two.
Saturday the Melstone Broncs escaped with a 51-
46 win. ScoRing was nots reported.
North Country is in Lewistown this weekend,
taking on Highwood and Custer-Hysham. Nashua hosts
the Glasgow JV Friday night.

Anything you would like to purchase for a resident is welcome, we do add a few ideas
to the name tag to assist in choosing a gift!

Gifts do not need to be wrapped, please bring your tag off the tree with you when
turning in the gift you purchased for a resident.
