The North Country Mavericks were “The Untouchables”
this season, breezing through the MHSA basketball
tournaments that started in February en route to their
second straight state title which includes a 54-game
win streak, dating back to the ’21-’22 season when they
placed third at State. Their easy 62-31 victory Saturday
night over Roy-Winifred makes it the fourth longest
winning streak in the history of MHSA girls basketball.

getting to the state title game, the Mavericks beat up on
Roberts 72-45 with a noon tip-off Thursday afternoon
and Twin Bridges 58-33 on Friday night after a 6:00
tip-off. The Mavs beat all the best as Roberts and Big
Timber would work their way through loser-out games
to battle for the consolation in which the Falcons would
prevail over the Rockets 61-46. The Falcons had just two
losses on the season as the Mavericks also thumped
them and Roberts back in December.

Cheese Burger Erickson has built a dynasty. The Mavericks
captured their second straight Class C State
Dine at the “O” championship. And, the Mavericks have
won 54 straight games in the process.
The 54 wins ties the Mavericks with
228-8006 Malta (2014-16) and Reed Point (2004-
06). Fairfield has the record with `120
wins from 2010-15. Great Falls High
has 72 (1980-83) and Richey 69 (1999-
2002).
The Mavericks (26-0) pulled away
from Roy-Winifred in the second half for
a 62-31 win Saturday night at Four Seasons
Arena at Montana ExpoPark Pacific Steel
& Recycling in Great Falls.
It was the same place where the
Mavericks started their winning streak.

The Mavericks led 30-28 at the half
against Roberts. Then blew the Rockets off
the floor in a 72-45 win Thursday.
In the championship game, the
Mavericks trailed 14 -13 after the first
quarter. But they led 27-21 at the break.
North Country went on to outscore Roy-
Winifred 35-10 in the second half for the
31-point victory.
Wasson led the Mavericks with 18 points.
Erickson had a double-double, scoring 16
points and grabbing 20 rebounds. LaBrie
added 10 points, Kendall Scheffelmear had
seven, Josie Brown four, Gracie Wasson
three, and Bailey McColly and Berkley
Hillman two each.
The Mavericks were 21 for 50 from
the field, 8 for 8 from the arc and 11 of 14
at the line. The Outlaws were 11 of 41, 4 for
23 and 5 for 9.
Friday night the Mavericks ran out to
a 12-4 first quarter lead and coasted to a 58-
33 win over Twin Bridges. North Country
led 32-12 at the break and 45-25 after three
quarters,
Twin Bridges (22-3) used a trapping
defense early in the game, but that worked
only once. It was the Mavericks defense
that kept the Falcons from scoring.
Erickson spent plenty of time on the
bench. She picked up her fourth foul with
3:39 to play in the third.
Paige Wasson paced the Mavericks
with 22 points. Brown had nine on three
3-pointers. LaBrie had eight points,
Scheffelmear and McColly six each,
Erickson four, and Emerson Downing
three.
The Mavericks were 20 of 43, 8 of 14
and 10 for 10. The Falcons were 14 for 40, 2
for 12 and 3 for 6.
Roy-Winifred whipped Melstone, 47-26, in
a semifinal game.
North Country defeated Twin Bridges

The Fort Peck Senior Citizens are sponsoring the
eighth annual fun walk/run across the face of Fort Peck
Dam on March 16, 2024. It is called “SLAM THE DAM
8” (Run with the Wind).
This is a non-competitive walk/run—no times will
be kept. On the morning of March 16, the committee
members will decide which direction the walk/run will
go—depending on which way the wind is blowing that
day. That means that hopefully, the wind will be at your
back, if at all. Watch for signs as you arrive or listen to
the radio to see from which side of the dam the walk/
run will begin.
Port-a-potties/bathrooms will be available at
beginning, midway, and end. Drivers are available if
you only want to do part of the walk/run. The distance
across is approximately four miles. You will be driven
back to your car when you complete the walk/run.
Every participant receives a finish souvenir. Water and
fruit will also be provided. Cost of the walk/run is $5.00 a
person—and the event is for ALL ages. Bikes or dogs are
NOT welcome. Registration will be from 9:00-10:00 that
morning—no pre-registration is needed. If you would
like to pre-register, you can do so at the Ft. Peck Credit
Union in Fort Peck or Glasgow or the Ft. Peck Town
Office, beginning March 6. Students under the age of
18 must have a parent sign the registration/release form.
The walk/run starts at 10:00. Proceeds will benefit
Senior Citizens’ projects. Supplemental funding is being

Letter to the Buzz
Hey, Buzz Readers,
By now you have had time to digest the baloney
sandwich that Biden fed us in the State of the Union
speech.
I was partially right (in my Thursday rant) about
the 3 faces of Biden. He did read from the teleprompter
for about 90 minutes with very few errors. No more
than any of us would make. On Friday, he was back to
mumbling and making no sense.
I did not hear much that he had accomplished in 3
years. I did hear a lot about what he would do.
Complaining about fewer chips in a bag, acting
like he invented the phrase ‘shrink-flation’. Blaming big
business for it. He claims that inflation is coming down.
The fact is, he caused inflation to go, in some cases, up
to 25%. It was around 1.6% when he came to power.
Granted, eggs and butter are less than a year ago, but
still more than double from four years ago. I was paying
$1.30 back then, now more than $3.00. Greeting cards
used to be too expensive at $3.00 each. Now you can try
to find one for less than $5.00. The really nice ones run
$9.99.
Claiming the national debt is lower, when there
was just a trillion-dollar ‘pork ‘package passed. The
GOP has to take part of the blame, for sure. Bragging
that we are way ahead of the Chinese! They laugh
about us now.
His claim about more jobs being filled. Most of
those were people going back to work after the Covid
shutdown. Thousands of those jobs were people taking a
part-time job because they cannot afford to live on their
full-time wage job. A Social Security check doesn’t go
too far anymore. Why do you think senior citizens are
greeting you at Walmart? They need the money! For
you very young people, those of us who are collecting
SS worked for it. It is not a benefit or a gift from the
government. I hope it’s still there when you have paid
into it for an entire career.
Blaming his predecessor for all the damage more
than once. He killed more than 300 bills that were
working the first 100 days he was in. He bragged about
that.
Border control. It was one of the bills that he killed
along with stopping the wall construction. He invited
all the illegals that are here and then has the audacity to
talk about how the young children and women are being
raped by the cartel. That is on Biden. In his speech, he
actually said ‘illegal aliens’. At least he knows who he
invited in. His people criticized him. He should have
said ‘undocumented migrants’.
This is just a short synopsis of 90 minutes of lies,
anger, and trying to be a hero included in the boloney
sandwich, with shrink-flation chips on the side. His
idea of Biden-omics is way different than mine.
What else did I get from a long list of b.s.? IT WAS
NOTHING MORE THAN A CAMPAIGN SPEECH.
He has had 3 years to fix the damage he did. He
shouldn’t have another 4 years to hurt our United States.
Someone will say if you don’t like it here, move. The
sad thing is, moving to Canada under Trudeau, would
be worse. The fact is, all our problems are fixable with
someone else in charge.
I will stand for the National Anthem and I respect
the flag. I don’t hate the man, but I do hate what he has
done to destroy our nation.
