The Montana Department of Transportation
(MDT) would like to announce and invite the public to
comment on a proposal to resurface about eight miles
of Montana Highway 24 (MT 24), south of Opheim. The
project begins 17 miles south of Opheim, and extends
north, ending at the intersection with Ruffcorn Road
and Gilbert Lane.
Proposed work includes cold-in-place recycling
(CIR), applying a new overlay, and finishing with a seal
and cover (chip seal), upgraded pavement markings,
signage, and guardrail. CIR is when the existing asphalt
surface is removed, mixed with a recycling agent, and
placed on the roadway. A separate overlay with new plant
mix will then be applied before the chip seal. The purpose
of the project is to extend the life of the roadway, improve
the driving surface, and reduce maintenance costs.
Construction is tentatively planned for 2027
depending on completion of design and availability of
funds. No new right-of-way or utility relocations are
anticipated.
Partnering with the community is an important
part of properly planning for future projects. MDT
welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments

Big Timber writer releases ‘A Montana Rivalry’ novel
Montana writer Jim Overstreet recently
released his first novel, A Montana Rivalry.
Known for his articles in Western Horseman
and other magazines, Overstreet grew up on the
Sun Ranch in southwest Montana’s Madison
Valley. He learned to rope by doctoring scour
calves and cows with pinkeye. Later, he was
calf roping champion in the old Montana
Rodeo Association. More recently, he won the
year end tie down roping championship for his
age group in the National Senior Professional
Rodeo Association. His book is filled with
vivid ranching and rodeo scenes told with
details that only an insider could know.
The core of the novel is the rivalry between
Rusty Blackston and Warren Weston who meet
for the first time at age seven and come to blows.
Afterward whenever they meet sparks fly.
Warren’s family owns a large ranch. His mother
idolizes him, but he can never quite live up to
his father’s demands. Rusty’s father is a fiddle-
footed cowboy, and his mother works two low-
paying jobs to feed her family. Yet Rusty and
his sisters grow up without realizing that they
are poor. Rusty’s father, a former saddle bronc
rider, grooms Rusty to ride broncs.
One of the other interesting characters
in the book is Harlan, an older cowboy, who
mentors both young men. Although they hate
each other, Rusty and Warren both idolize
Harlan. Warren is big and Rusty is small, but
Harlan teaches them both to steer wrestle.

Lions add two more wins

They are an exciting team to watch. Fans had the
opportunity to watch them play at the 11th Annual
Class C Showcase held in Glasgow. Last weekend fans
from Scobey and other fans had the privilege to see
them play.
The Lustre Christian Lions have been putting on
a show this basketball season. The boys from Lustre
Christian High School added two more wins to their
record and bolster a 4-0 record. Last year the Lions
finished the season with a 24-2 record. They entered
the state tournament with a 23-0 mark.
This year’s Lions may be more fun to watch than
last year’s. Johnslee Pierre recorded five slam dunks in
Glasgow and more than likely had more in Scobey.
Pierre is not the only one to watch. Terran Joseph,
the Reddig boys, Cayden Klatt, and others are fun to
watch.
The Lions took care of business white at the
Scobey Invitational Tournament. Lustre Christian
defeated Broadus, 78-48, and Froid-Lake 67-42.
Klat burned the nets with six 3-pointers and
Pierre four treys against Broadus.
The Hawks took a 15-11 lead behind the scoring
of Cooper Zimmer, who had 10 points. Byron Ewing
sparked the Lions, scoring eight points. Klatt also had
eight with two treys.
The Lions tallied 26 points in the second period
for a 37-25 lead. Lustre Christian continued its scoring
in the third with 27 points. Pierre led the Lions with 14
points, including two treys. The Lions led 64-32.
Zimmer finished the game with 19 points, Josh
Rasmussen added 10, Landen Capp had seven, Matt
Hansen five, Thomas Oylar three, Jayce Schroeder and
Jaxon Bilbrey two each.
Klatt and Pierre shared game-scoring honors
with 22 points each. Ewing followed with 12 points,
Cam Reddig had eight, Clay Reddig and Joseph four

the Redhawks. But the Lions main job was stopping
6-foot-5 senior Mason Dethman. The Redhawks also
had Note Stentoft that could get hot.
It was Dethman and Stentoft that did all of the
scoring in the first half for the Redhawks. Dethman
had 10 points, seven in the first quarter, and Stentoft
six points.
The Lions held a 32-16 lead at the break, Pierre
had 13 points in the first half.

Scobey thumped Froid-Lake 60-38 and Broadus 53-
34, Plentywood beat Circle 70-42 and Mon-Dak beat
Frazer 47-29. Nashua had the week off.
