SGM Matthew G. Thorn is a
native of Glasgow, MT and he enlisted
in the Army in July 1990 as a Motor
Transport Operator.
He attended basic training,
advanced individual training at Fort
Dix New Jersey, and earned the MOS
of transportation specialist (88M).
MSG Thorn has served in
multiple positions throughout his
career. His assignments include,
Motor Transport Operator, Bridge
Crew Member, Section Leader,
COMSEC Custodian, Platoon
Sergeant, Ammunition Logistics For those of us who enjoyed watching Mathew Thorn growing up and

rank required for the leadership position of Command
Sergeant Major. A Sergeant Major assists Officers in a
battalion-sized force of 300 to 1,000 soldiers, and leads
soldiers and junior officers placed directly under his
command. A Sergeant Major may also serve as the
senior non-commissioned officer at a battallion-sized
headquarters unit. Sergeant Major is the 11th rank in
the United States Army, ranking above First Sergeant
and directly below Command Sergeant Major.

Mess With The Bull and You Get The Horns

It was 1965 and I was at my pilot training base
in West Texas at Webb AFB. I was in flight planning
and Air Traffic Control and we were up in the control
tower, and had just launched 10 T-38 Northrop
trainers, which without a back seat is an F-5 fighter.
The “studs” (students) that were airborne had
taken off at 0600hrs so it was early and cold. The
normal flight for training was 1 hour and 20 minutes.
Watching the planes do touch and goes after their
mission was standard. However, one of my students
was not visible nor was he audible.
Finally, we gave a call to the pilot fearing the
worst and received no answer. Finally after repeated
calls we heard a frantic response: “Abdul lost, Abdul
lost, Abdul lost”!
Now, just about anyone can feel the tension and
fear when someone is in a situation on the ground
but when you are 30,000 feet in the air and have just
neared the sound barrier over the West Texas desert in
a screaming fighter plane and you realize that there are
not too many land objects to get your bearings on but
only desert, well you are in trouble.
You have lost all senses of direction and even if
you are flying IFR or VFR you are alone, well maybe
not this time.
Abdulla was from Egypt and built like Dwayne
Johnson and could have easily played fullback for any
NFL team hands down. Shaking his hand was like
putting your hand in a catchers mitt.
Well, fear was more than evident in his voice and
none of us in the tower spoke Egyptian but then I
made a quick trip to the flight shack and contacted El
Mustafa, an Israeli student who had lived in Egypt and
spoke the language fluently! El Mustafa was a slight
man, only about 140 lbs and on the short side.
We did not have to ask him for his assistance. He ran
out of the room grabbing his helmet!
An A.G.E. truck, much like a UPS truck now, but
only Air Force Blue, was waiting. The control tower
cleared the area of planes and of course the emergency
vehicles were standing by. El had the microphone in
his hands and all outside communication was halted. I
was a spotter looking for the missing T-38 and did not
see anything for the longest time when John Carberry,
my supervisor, saw a glimmer in the sky over the

Midland is about 80 or so miles away from Webb,
AFB, but that is covered in a blink of an eye at 600MPH.
We screamed to El in the truck that we spotted him
and the language barrier left us in the dark as the two
talked to each other.
Finally Abdulla brought the plane in for its final
touchdown and he was safely home. Abdulla parked
the plane on H row and El Mustafa picked him up with
his equipment.
By now, the flight line was full of fellow students
applauding. The two pilots embraced and went for
debriefing, walking together laughing about the near
fatal incident.
They graduated and were on their way to their
respective countries. Egypt and Israel. By the way,
their father’s actually told them, if they graduated
from flight school, they would buy them their own F-5
plane!
Just one year later, the two countries were at war
called the 6 Day War as it was quickly ended by the
Israelis. Through the years I have often wondered if
those two fellow students actually met in combat and
if so……..
Well, unless you have been living under a rock,
you know what is going on in the Middle East.
A Newsweek Reporter was reporting that he was
in Thailand when he got wind of the news and boarded
a commercial plane for the flight to Israel. He said that
the plane was almost totally empty when men boarded
the plane filling the plane in every conceivable spot.
Some rode in the toilet area, sitting on the toilet seat
and others sat in the aisles. The reporter said that over
300 Jewish men were aboard for the 9 hour flight to
Israel. They were residents of another country but
were going home to fight for their country.
A few weeks ago, at Shady Rest rv park, a young
family came in and said that they were Jewish traveling
the United States and asked Greg Pederson if the US

was still allies saying “We are still allies, yes”? They
were enjoying their visit to America.
A few weeks later, a family came in from Canada
and were also Jewish, but they were former military
personnel now retired, just wanting peace and quiet.
Both the wife and husband were ex-military and they
told me that they hoped that they could give their son
and daughter a peaceful life after they left Israel.
In the morning, they left waving and laughing
happy to be in the United States of America. And now,
just a few weeks later feces has hit the oscillator! Have
they gone back to Israel, well, in my mind, no doubt
about it!
We only hope and pray that we do not have to face
that peril here in America. With almost 11 million
unvetted immigrants just turned loose in our field of
dreams, I wonder how soon we will have to defend
ourselves from barbarians. Some will roll their eyes
and poo-poo it off saying it cannot happen here. Well,
Israel has the best of the best in surveillance and early
warning system and the slaughter is very disturbing.
Just makes you wonder just how safe you really
are.
And so it goes.

 OBITUARY
Mac McPherson
Gerald Edwin McPherson (aka Jerry Mac) was
born on February 16, 1934, and crossed over into
eternity on October 9, 2023.
Mac was born in Glasgow and reared on the
McPherson ranch in McCone County. He was
the third child of Thomas and Leila (Copeland)
McPherson. Mac’s sister, Phyllis, died in infancy, in
1927. Ronald was born in 1929 and finally Mac in
1934. Jerry and Ronnie grew up on the ranch during
the “Dam Days”: the construction of the Fort Peck
Dam (1933-1940).
Both Ronnie and Mac graduated from Nashua
High School and were stand-out athletes…
excelling in both basketball and baseball. After Mac
graduated, he went to work for Mountain States
Telephone Company (later becoming Mountain
Bell), working under his brother Ronnie. Together,
they were instrumental in making the transition
from operator-assisted phone service, to direct-dial,
here in Valley County.
In 1956 Mac met and married Shirley Sandsness,
in Helena, Montana. In the years that followed, they
raised five children: Denise, Mike, Dawn, and twin
girls, Michelle, and Marcelle (Marcelle passed away
after only two days).
In 1959, after losing his brother Ronnie in a car
accident, Jerry moved his family back to Nashua. He
and Shirley bought a house in Glasgow in 1963 and
the kids would all graduate, as proud “Scotties”, from
Glasgow High School. Jerry and Shirley divorced in
1974.
As an avid outdoorsman, Mac spent a great
deal of time fishing and hunting… and fishing! And
when he wasn’t working or fishing, he enjoyed a
variety of sports, including baseball, softball, and
basketball leagues, bowling, golf, and… did we
mention fishing?!
Shortly before his retirement from the Telephone
Company, in 1982, Jerry married Jennie Miller. The
two spent a great deal of time golfing, bowling,
and loving on their dog Clancy. The couple took to
wintering with friends at their place in Arizona and
lived the rest of the year at their home in Fort Peck.
Jennie passed away in 2010, as well as their beloved
“furbaby”, Clancy.
Not wanting their dad to be alone, Jerry’s
children got him
a puppy.… he
named him Jake…
and the bestest
friendship ensued!
Wherever you saw,
“Mac,” you saw
Jake!
For the next
11 years, the two
were absolutely
inseparable. It was
during these years that Jerry’s struggle with dementia
began to manifest itself. When Jake passed away
in 2021, it turned Jerry’s life upside down. All his
friends… at the Gateway, the Marina, Duck Creek,
the Oasis, and Alleys Palace… can attest to that.
In 2022, Mac moved back into Glasgow and took
up residence with two of his daughters who, with the
help of “Hopencagen,” and “Old Mud”, have made
him happy and comfortable right up to his passing!
Mac is preceded in death by his parents Tom
and Leila; sister, Phyllis; brother, Ronnie; daughter,
Marcelle; first wife, Shirley; second, wife Jennie;
grandson, Brett Howard; son-in-law, Tom Thompson,
and great-granddaughter, Devon Thompson.
Jerry is survived by his four children: Denise
(Jeff ) Howard of Helena, Mike (Linda) McPherson
of Great Falls, Dawn Thompson of Glasgow, and

Family received friends Thursday, October
12, 2023, at Bell Mortuary. Funeral services were
held Friday, October 13, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at
Bell Mortuary with pastor Christine Hollenbeck
officiating. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery
with a reception following at the Sunnyside Country
Club where Mac spent plenty of time. Condolences
